County seat and center of a fertile farming area, Pipestone is host to visitors en route to Pipestone National Monument. Some of the red Sioux quartzite from the quarries shows up in Pipestone's public buildings. George Catlin, famous painter of Native Americans, was the first white man to report on the area.
