Hotel deLuxe

A retro Portland hotel
VERIFIED LUXURY
You may think of Portland as artsy and green—but the city also has its share of glamour, and upon entering the downtown Hotel deLuxe, you’ll soon see why. Hotel deLuxe, built in 1912, takes its dramatic Art Deco cues from the hotel’s theme: retro Hollywood glamour. By paying homage to the golden era of Hollywood, the hotel has created an air of timeless sophistication without snobbery. Details of days gone past—such as a 1950s-style cocktail bar—blend seamlessly with modern amenities.

Not only do you get ultra-personalized service from a friendly staff at this Forbes Travel Guide Recommended hotel, you can also get a Hollywood history lesson during your visit. See and be seen in the hotel lobby, where black-and-white movie stills of the Hollywood greats rotate on an oversized electronic screen and the happy hour crowd spills out from the swank Driftwood Room bar.

Our Inspector's Highlights
  • Hotel deLuxe’s is conveniently situated in a quieter southwest pocket of downtown Portland near the hip Pearl District. Light rail Max service is just two blocks away, if you wish to go carless.
  • Film buffs will have plenty of eye candy. With more than 400 black and white photos of Hollywood screen stars lining the hotel walls, film lovers (or just casual admirers) could spend an entire day indulging in a classic film fetish.
  • The best in-room dessert delivery: Salt & Straw ice cream. It’s handmade with a farm-to-cone philosophy, featuring unexpected flavors such as Bourbon Pecan Pie and Honey Balsamic Strawberry with Cracked Pepper.
  • Because the hotel is on the National Historic Register, each unique room retains its original size and shape, just as they were built in 1912.
  • The Marlene Dietrich Suite features an 8-foot circular bed with a custom pillowtop mattress. The actress’s namesake is the focal point of the hotel’s top-of-the-line accommodation, which has an exceptional downtown view and enough space to host guests.
Things to Know
  • During the summer, dinner and a movie takes on a whole new meaning on the rooftop. Weekly evening movie screenings on top of the hotel include live music, cocktails, beer, barbeque and a stunning city view.
  • Pets can stay with you here, and they’ll be just as pampered as you are with amenities like pet room service, cat and dog in-room acupuncture and pet psychic consultations.
  • You can indulge in a belly-filling brunch until 2 p.m. every day. Sleep in late and still enjoy crispy bread pudding French toast served with Nuvrei pastries.
  • It’s hard to go wrong with champagne cocktails at the Driftwood Room, and the Elizabeth Taylor cocktail is just too good to pass up — it’s an irresistible mixture of Crème de Violette and champagne.
The Rooms
  • Guest rooms range from very cozy to very spacious, depending on the room type and location within Hotel deLuxe.
  • Room types include the Queen Deluxe, the King Deluxe, the more spacious King Feature (one king bed, plus couch seating and room to stretch), the Queen Queen Premiere (two queen beds), and the King or Queen Premiere Suite (a living area with a separate bedroom).
  • The guest rooms’ predominate color is a warm butter yellow and is accented with tangerine, citron green, turquoise and white. The spaces are bright and refreshing, ideal to curl up in on Portland’s dreariest days.
  • The bathrooms at the historic hotel are cozy and full of charm and elegant appointments — think immaculate white metal-legged sinks, subway tile baths and showers, and clear glass shelves to display an array of Aveda amenities.
The Restaurants
  • Hotel deLuxe has only one restaurant: Gracie’s, which is inspired by Old Hollywood glam with marble-topped tables, banquettes, crystal chandeliers.
  • Serving up American cuisine, you can get brunch daily until 2 p.m. and fantastic local, seasonal small bites from the farm, ranch and sea starting at 5 p.m. daily.
  • Dinner entrées include substantial choices such as Double R Ranch New York steak and walnut crusted Draper Valley chicken.
  • For champagne cocktails and signature drinks including the Freida Kahlo and the Basil Rathbone, head to the Mad Men-esque Driftwood Room bar, an intimate, low-lit 1950s-inspired watering hole just off the lobby.
  • Bar bites include mouth-watering selections such as white cheddar fries, sizzling forest mushrooms and poached artichoke and crudités with sundried tomato aioli.
