Prestonsburg, located between the Big Sandy River and forested hills, is surrounded by coal, oil, and natural gas fields. In 1862, Colonel James A. Garfield achieved a decisive Union victory nearby; the first major triumph for the Union cause in the Civil War. This victory elevated Garfield to the rank of general and started him on the road to the presidency.
