Ridgefield is unusual among communities settled in the 19th century because it has a main street of boulevard width--99 feet lined with tree-shaded houses. On this street in 1777, Benedict Arnold (still a revolutionary) set up barricades and fought the Battle of Ridgefield against General Tyron.
