Rome’s subterranean sanctuary
14 Treatment Rooms
Good spa treatments in Rome aren’t hard to find, but a visit to Prince Spa is something special. Located beneath the impossibly elegant hotel Parco dei Principi Grand Hotel & Spa, the 21,500-square-foot wellness retreat is every inch as opulent as the hotel in which it’s housed. Natural materials like bamboo, stone and precious woods are all designed to reflect nature’s elements (that would be air, water, earth and fire). The spa itself is only part of a larger wellness center ripe with luxurious extras like saunas, a fitness area, spa café and a hairdresser.
The underground spa is serious about pampering. A welcoming vibe follows you from reception throughout the Rome spa thanks to a Zen-influenced design of warm tones, twinkling chromatherapy lights and luxe materials. There are 12 regular treatment rooms plus two private spa suites with private Jacuzzis that cater to couples. The wet area is tricked out with different experiences to try out before or after a treatment, including a Finnish sauna, a mosaic-tiled steam room, ice fountains, sensorial showers, a whirlpool and an indoor pool covered by a ceiling bedecked with Swarovski crystals. Along with hydro massages, Prince Spa also has a Kneipp area where you can try a cold and hot knee-high plunge bath for circulation stimulation. The fitness area is a sprawling 4,840 square feet with Technogym equipment and studio rooms that hold group classes or private training sessions.
Sometimes more is more. And that mantra prevails at Prince Spa, whose lengthy menu includes Cleopatra milk baths, exotic fruit wraps and third-eye massages. Almost all of the facials as well as several body treatments — a wide selection of cleanses, wraps and anti-aging therapies — are performed with signature products by Maria Galland, a coveted French line of cosmetics. The massage menu includes more than 15 different customizable methods, including combinations like foot reflexology and an indulgent 60-minute massage. For full-on spa-going decadence, opt for the Wellness Waves package. It includes a welcome herbal tea, a nourishing yogurt wrap and a massage using age-old Oriental techniques.
There’s no need to feel guilty about bellying up to i-Food bio-bar, which serves up healthy eats, sweet treats and vitamin cocktails. If the weather is warm, take advantage of the posh scene at the outdoor pool. A manicured and verdant 5,380-square-foot garden complex worthy of a Gatsby shindig, the pool area has plush lounge chairs, a terrace restaurant, a poolside grill and private cabanas where you can hole up and order a glass of bubbly.
