The Firehouse is the best classic restaurant in Sacramento. The Old Sacramento institution has been in business since 1960, though the brick building dates back to 1853, when it was created to house the fire department. Inside the restored fine-dining restaurant, you’ll find chandeliers, a stained-glass dome, fine art, formally attired waitstaff and food that’s equally elegant. Try the steak Delmonico, a center-cut rib-eye with caramelized shallot-tomato butter and house-cured pork belly, or the lamb asado with chimichurri pesto, sheep’s milk feta, a vegetable-barley salad and tomato fonduta. For dessert, order the rich gianduja mousse bombe, a chocolate mousse cake with raspberry-zinfandel sorbet and crème fraîche, or the nectarine en croûte, a flaky pastry pocket filled with the fruit and a brown sugar crumble.
