Just the sight of JW Marriott Shanghai at Tomorrow Square sets it apart from other hotels. The Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star hotel is Shanghai’s fifth-tallest building, making it an imposing presence in the city’s skyline. Its tall, peaked tower gives it a futuristic look (it actually made us think of the Transformers movies). Inside, wraparound windows in the Lobby Lounge and restaurants serve up sweeping views alongside afternoon tea and Western and Asian dishes. Pull up a window-side chair and you’ll be able to take in the full expanse of downtown Shanghai, including leafy People’s Park and jam-packed East Nanjing Road. You’ll want your camera when you visit the seventh-floor outdoor pool, which is a popular spot for sunbathing and cooling off — from there you can see into Pudong. On weekends the pool is crowded with Shanghai’s expats.
