A mix of tourists, foodies and executives converge behind the Slanted Door—some
attracted by mesmerizing views of the Bay and bridge, others by cocktails, but
most by owner Charles Phan, who has a reputation as the city’s best Vietnamese
chef. Snake past the glamorous revelers who jam-pack the long bar and low-slung
cocktail couches (try one of the brightly colored drinks like The Last Word, a
combination of gin, Maraschino and green chartreuse, and you’ll know why they’re
here). The place is comfy despite its stark, gray granite décor. Food includes crispy
imperial rolls, caramelized catfish claypot and tender shaking beef—nothing you
couldn’t get elsewhere for much less money, until you factor in the top-notch local
ingredients, smart waitstaff, deliciously balanced desserts, lovely wine list heavy on
German and Austrian riesling and unparalleled tea service.
