While technically not part of the city, any visit to South Bend must include a portion of time spent at the Notre Dame campus. Take advantage of the photo opportunities afforded by the Hesburgh Library's mosaic and the Main Building's Golden Dome. Check out the stunning art and architecture of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, and if the weather is nice, take a walk through the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes. A short drive south brings visitors to downtown South Bend, with the St. Joseph River running through it and a vibrant selection of shops and restaurants. Sample the confections of the South Bend Chocolate Café and take a tour of the factory to see how the sweet treats are made. Stop at the Chicory Café for one of its unique coffee drinks and a beignet. South Bend features a number of beautiful homes and historic neighborhoods, among them Chapin Park and the North Shore Triangle, many of them dating back to the turn of the last century. Visit the Studebaker Mansion for a prime example of local architecture and then venture over to the nearby Studebaker Museum for a taste of Americana honoring the defunct auto manufacturer. Be sure to check the schedule of the Morris Performing Arts Center, home to the stars of vaudeville when it opened in 1921 and now the area's leading venue for national tours by musical acts, comedians and Broadway shows.
