One of the last independent hotels in Boston, the Colonnade
Hotel recently poured $20 million into a gut renovation of
its rooms and public spaces, giving its once-tired interior a
glossy new look—the lobby’s done up with black woods,
gleaming tile and detailed molding, while the guest rooms
are dressed in soothing neutrals. Guests might not notice
new little touches like extra outlets for charging up iPods
and laptops, or the air conditioning that senses when
you’ve entered the room. But they’re there, and they make
a stay here very comfortable. For all the flashy upgrades,
the hotel’s greatest asset has remained untouched: On hot
summer days, the glistening rooftop pool teems with sun
worshippers. Rooftop renovations are in the works, but in
the meantime, it’s still the city’s best spot to catch some
rays.
