You’re in good company at the Sunset Tower Hotel (formerly The Argyle, but the
hotel returned to its inaugural name), previously the stomping ground for Marilyn
Monroe, Frank Sinatra and Truman Capote. Even now, heavy hitters like Tom Ford,
Leonardo DiCaprio and Nicole Kidman are seen cavorting on the casual terrace
or at the more upscale Tower Bar. While overlooking all of Los Angeles, you’ll sip
coffee from in-room cappuccino machines (in some suites), relax on Egyptian cotton
sheets, slather yourself in Kiehl’s products, park your iPod in docking stations, and
let your pup indulge in beyond-pet-friendly services like mini-beds and an adjoining
dog run. The lobby is nothing showy, but just beyond it is the updated Art Deco
pool area that affords extraordinary views. Housed in Bugsy Siegel’s old apartment,
The Tower Bar and Restaurant (greatly praised under new executive chef Janice Alexander) is a welcome nostalgic throwback, as you’ll sip
martinis and sidecars amid fairly masculine, dark wood
appointments à la a gentleman’s library and tap your foot to
a jazz pianist’s tunes. Downstairs, The Argyle Salon and Spa
offers traditional men’s shaves, private spa treatment rooms
(where celebrities have been known to doll up before events),
med-spa offerings and, most significantly, some of the industry’s
most renowned hair stylists, such as product guru Philip
B. and colorist Steven Tapp, who works on big names such
as Madonna.
