What does Art Smith look for in a hotel?
I like antiquity, but I also really like cool and hip, and sometimes these very elegant places tend not to be really hip. So it all depends on where I am. When I’m in Los Angeles, I want to be in a hipper place, like The Standard, Downtown LA. But if I’m in New York, I don’t mind a little old elegance — like something cool from the ’30s. I also look for excellent food. The Grand Hyatt Hotel in Shanghai has the best Chinese breakfast. And I love the traditional Palestinian Markook bread at The American Colony Hotel Jerusalem. It’s paper-thin unleavened bread and when you unfold it, is almost transparent — you simply tear it apart and use it to scoop various dips and hummus.
