As a registered dietician to the stars, Ashley Koff has made a name for herself in the nutrition world. Her ability to demystify the science of nutrition and communicate the importance of healthy choices has elevated her to becoming one of the best in her field. She created the Ashley Koff Approved (AKA) Lists that help identify everything from groceries to beauty products that help foster a healthy lifestyle. The Los Angeles-based dietician appears regularly on several shows, such as Dr. Oz, Good Morning America Health and The Doctors. In 2011, Koff released her second book, Mom Energy: A Simple Plan to Live Fully Charged. When she’s not spreading the message of healthy living, Koff has a private practice in Beverly Hills with celebrity clients such as Molly Sims, Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Andy Richter.

    What is Ashley Koff’s favorite airline?

    I am Virgin America and Virgin Atlantic, etc. to the core. What they have done in recent years reminds me of what it was like when I started traveling out of school in the mid-’90s, and I was traveling a ton at that point. And then I traveled Singapore Air internationally, and I would say that it’s very high caliber with that.

    What’s the best trip Ashley Koff has ever taken?

    That is picking between children. I can’t [choose]. I will say that I have an extremely fond spot in my heart for trips where I get to be outdoors and really celebrate the outdoors. I’m not an adventurer or sports person. I’m not looking to drop in on a mountain or that sort of thing, but I do love fishing. So if I get to incorporate one day of fishing, which I try to do on a lot of my trips, that’s going to elevate that trip to a top tier.

    What kind of shops does Ashley Koff visit when traveling?

    When I travel, typically there’s a fitness center in a hotel; but I do usually go and find a spinning or yoga studio. I also end up picking up some sort of fitness accessory — whether it’s a shirt, pants, socks, T-shirt or something like that. 

    In terms of other stores, I really like to celebrate what’s local. I’m constantly on the road, so I’m going to be looking for something new that would interest my followers, who maybe haven’t had the opportunity to visit this spot. So I’ll pick up something high-quality, local. Maybe it’s food; maybe it’s a cooking accessory.

    What does Ashley Koff always travel with?

    If I didn’t have these things with me before arriving at my hotel, I am going to find a way to get them. And that is, first and foremost, Natural Calm by Natural Vitality. That’s my magnesium powder, magnesium citrate. It is what keeps me healthy and happy on the road. So that’s a definite.

    I love to take baths, so I usually travel with Joyful Bath Company’s relaxing bath powders. Then I have Hope Gillerman’s H. Gillerman Organics. I travel with her essential oils. That’s really important. Say that the room doesn’t feel as fresh, I’ll rub some of the oil on the back of the pillow so that the bed smells better — that sort of thing.

    And I always, always, always travel with a pair of running/walking shoes just to make sure that I can get fitness in in some way.

    What features does Ashley Koff look for in a hotel?

    I think one of the most important things is customer service. Four Seasons, to me, hits customer service in that right inner section where they’re super involved in what I need, helping me find things, doing it but not overdoing it. I don’t feel like it’s extremely fancy, so it doesn’t feel overwhelming. It just feels kind of the way I would be at home. I think they’re there for you when you need them, and then they’re not in your space too much. 

    I also find that they do a really good job of keeping the rooms clean. When you walk into the room, it feels fresh. That might be the way they’re designed with lighting. But the air feels fresh. Typically, there are plants, or a lot of times they leave fruit for me; I love coming in and getting that. I think that there’s that feeling of a fresh, clean room and great customer service.

    What are Ashley Koff’s favorite restaurants?

    Pretty much wherever I go, I will use different resources, like Forbes Travel Guide, to find what’s happening in the farm-to-table space. By nature, I like things that are more simple and focus on the quality of the ingredients, so it’s going to be a different restaurant in every space. But it’s probably going to be where I know the chef is really interested in the quality of the ingredients and same with the person doing the wine, beer or whatever it is.

    You know, I just have to say the Four Seasons has my heart. I’m constantly impressed. I love the Four Seasons. To me, it’s really about feeling comfortable; but consistently when I travel, the Four Seasons is one that just stands out above the others.

    What are Ashley Koff’s favorite cities?

    There are two sides of it. One is I love going new places, so for me, any city. I like being able to go see a new city, especially if I can get some local suggestions. Then I get the flavor of the area. The thing that’s hard is if there’s someplace that I just absolutely love going to.

    I’m actually not a big-city person, so I love medium-size cities or finding the parts of a big city that seem smaller. In New York or L.A., I’ll find certain neighborhoods that make it feel smaller. Vancouver is a great example of that. I love going to San Francisco and going over to Oakland and the Berkeley area and doing that sort of a thing. So it’s going to be the smaller ones within.

    Carmel-by-the-Sea in California is one of absolute favorite cities to go to. There are bed and breakfasts there — one or two that I go and stay at that I absolutely love.

    How does Ashley Koff stay healthy while traveling?

    I have a whole kit, the Ashley Koff Approved Travel Kit, and I swear by it. A lot of it is what I do before I travel also and what I don’t do. I really try not to drink alcohol or coffee right before I’m getting on a plane or the night before. I instead try to focus on hydration. I might be drinking a green juice on my way to the airport. A lot of times I’ll make a smoothie that has coconut water in it and a green juice. This is if I’m leaving from my home base. If I’m somewhere else, I might try to find the next best version or just go with straight-up water. But I try not to overdo the water because I also don’t want to be in a lot of public bathrooms all the time.

    I travel with non-alcohol-based hand sanitizer, H. Gillerman Organics essential oils and digestive enzymes by Enzymedica — they’re call Digest Gold. Those are super important because one of the things that I find is that you eat a little bit differently when you’re traveling, and I might eat something that falls into my second or third choice at home in terms of quality. And if you’re not breaking the food down, then you feel full and uncomfortable, and that can interfere with your sleep and keep you from being as healthy. 

    I also travel with tea bags that have different healing properties. I might travel with Throat Coat, Breathe Easy or Relaxation, so that I know I can just add hot water and have that.

    Then I also travel with dehydrated coconut water, the powdered coconut water, which I can add to anything to keep me hydrated. I have a handful of these little packets of hemp hearts because a lot of times the only thing that’s available are poor-quality versions of chicken, fish or any of these sorts of things that I wouldn’t eat for protein. But I want to make sure that I get my protein and essential fatty acids.

    I have this whole regime for beauty/skin care. A friend of mine locally makes it. Her company is called Elique, and it’s sold nationally, but she makes it from the farmers market. She makes these hydrosols that you spray so they keep your skin hydrated. Then I put her cream on my face and I spray that again. I do that every couple of hours to avoid my skin getting too dried out.
