Cristie Kerr

Professional Golfer

Scottsdale

Cristie Kerr began playing golf at the age of 7 in her hometown of Miami, Florida, and wasted little time establishing herself as a rising star on the course. Her amateur career is considered by many to be one of the most decorated in the game’s history. In 1996, Kerr turned pro at the age of 18 and gained momentum year after year. In 2002, Kerr captured her first LPGA victory and since then, no American has won more LPGA tournaments than her 16. Kerr has never been ranked outside of the top 13 since the inception of the World Ranking system. And in 2010, she became the first American to reach No. 1 in the world when she won the LPGA Championship by a record 12 shots. Kerr has won two major championships (she also won the 2007 U.S. Women’s Open) and her career earnings of more than $15 million make her the highest-earning American women’s golfer of all-time and third overall in the history of the LPGA Tour. But beyond the greens, she is a well-recognized breast cancer activist, aspiring sommelier and proud owner of her own label, Curvature Wine. Kerr is married to Erik Stevens and spends her time between homes in Miami, Scottsdale and New York City. In December 2013, the couple welcomed their first child, a boy, Mason.

What is the best Italian restaurant in Phoenix & Scottsdale?

There is a little place called Gianfranco. The owner [Gianfranco Motti] is from Italy. We go there and they’ve had our wine on the menu for a few years now. He is a character. If you ever see him, he can be wearing a green apron with a red bandana for Christmas. If he sits and talks to you, you would probably be there another hour.

What are some common mistakes that Cristie Kerr sees traveling golfers make?

If you’re going on a vacation where you’re playing golf so much, find a great pub to go to, or find a great restaurant to unwind at. If you’re traveling with your spouse and they’re not playing golf, make it interesting for them as well. Let them go antiquing or let them go do the spa thing. Let them go hiking and then you meet at the end and share an experience over dinner. It just requires a little bit of research. There are plenty of good travel websites out there that will help you. It takes a little bit of research, but you can really make it worthwhile.

What are Cristie Kerr’s top three golf travel tips?

You need a good travel case. You don’t want to show up when you’re so excited for your golf vacation and have your stuff broken. You want it to be able to travel easy, and you don’t want to pull a muscle carrying around your clubs during your vacation. I use the Sun Mountain golf travel bag, and it’s the easiest thing that you could ever get. I can literally wheel my golf clubs around with one finger. That’s how easy this travel case is. The second thing is … well, I’m a weather junkie. I love the weather. I grew up in Miami and lived through Hurricane Andrew. You need to know about the weather wherever you’re going. You need to be prepared with your clothing that you’re going to have. The third travel tip is to make it an experience. It’s not just about the golf. Find out what great restaurants are there. Find small, local, family places you can go. Make it an experience. I’ve traveled around the world my whole life. I know little, tiny places that people have never heard of. I know the big restaurant chains, too. You have to make traveling around an experience.

What are the five best things to see and do in Phoenix & Scottsdale?

Well, one of the reasons we moved here was for the golf. Golf and the weather, I would say, are the main reasons people come here in the wintertime. What people don’t know about Scottsdale is that it is really, really known for horses. It’s known for people that do dressage, for roping and the rodeo. So, for horses, they have a lot of big horse shows here. The third thing, obviously, I think is the outdoor sports: biking, hiking and being very active.

A lot of people come here because of the different kinds of social things to do. There are a lot of bikers. We live in North Scottsdale, and in [nearby] Cave Creek there are high-end Harley bars and places to go watch football games and just hang out. A lot of people like riding out here. And when I say riding, I mean motorcycles. They do a lot of outdoor sports. I’m trying to think of what else Arizona is known for. Just general lifestyle things. Scottsdale/Phoenix is a great place to live. Sports are another thing. We have all the major sports: basketball, hockey, football and baseball. It’s kind of a spread-out city, but it is very, very active.

What are the best Italian restaurants in New York City?

If you talk about Italian food in New York, you can’t go wrong with Il Mulino and [our maître d’] Claudio. That’s our go-to birthday or date place.
