What is the most beautiful hotel Ed Ng has ever stayed in?
Without doubt, Park Hyatt Tokyo is still the most beautiful hotel because of the strong influence it had on my early career. When it first opened some two decades ago, I was still a very green designer; Park Hyatt Tokyo taught me the art of understated luxury. Some examples of understated luxury include the muted color scheme with different shades of green and a natural smoky accent on the timber. The choice of materials truly reflects the wabi-sabi aesthetic of Japanese culture, a concept that has taught us about the beauty in imperfection. Beauty is in what you feel rather than what you see, and this has had a very strong influence in our designs. In this hotel, nothing exists purely as a decoration; nothing screams ornate and tries to be a focal point — everything is in complete harmony. It remains timeless to this day.
