How did Gerard Basset get into the world of wine?

I started off life as a waiter, but then I went to chef school and worked two years as a chef. I wasn’t particularly talented at it, even though I passed the French chef exam. In addition, I did not like the kitchen atmosphere, which at the time was very aggressive. So I moved back to the front of house; a restaurant manager called Victor put me onto serving wine and I fell in love with it. Fortunately, later on I had a very supportive employer who nurtured my interest and put me through my wine exams, and also a wonderful wife who has sacrificed a lot of her time to help me succeed in my wine qualifications.
