What are Jo Soh’s favorite restaurants?
I like China House Penang in George Town, Penang [Malaysia]. They took two old shophouses and joined them together, so you can get into the building from one street and walk out to another street. The atmosphere is great — it’s filled with art and is very relaxed and laid-back; there are lots of books and magazines. It’s somewhere that you can hang out for hours — and that’s nice. They have a bakery inside and the cakes are delicious. I ate one every day during my three-day stay in Penang. They appear to rotate the cakes that are available each day, so I don't remember the exact names of the cakes; but I do remember a large fluffy slice covered in cream cheese and coconut shavings — a slice so heavenly it practically arrived at the table with a halo around it.
