John T.A. Vanderslice

Hotelier

Washington

John T.A. Vanderslice grew up in Schenectady, N.Y., and moved around the country as a child, attending 13 different schools before studying at Boston College. A nomad himself, Vanderslice excels at creating welcoming experiences for travelers. After growing hospitality brands such as Miraval Spa and Club Med Americas, he became the global head of luxury and lifestyle brands for Hilton Worldwide in 2009 and masterminded a new mission statement for the venerable company: target the evolving luxury market. Vanderslice has overseen exponential growth in Hilton’s prestige brands — Conrad Hotels & Resorts and Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts — by expanding into new international markets (Panama, Macau, Scotland) and nearly doubling the number of properties in each group.

What does John T.A. Vanderslice always travel with?

What I bring is too many chargers. I can’t believe the entire electronics world can’t get together and fix that. Somehow we’ll fix it in our hotels. Because I travel so much, I also keep my passport, wallet and everything I need to travel in the same pocket and the same place every time, no matter where I am in the world. I also can’t change my Tumi roller bag. It’s got to be the same stuff. I travel with an iPad, but I’m not very good at typing on it, so I bring an Apple keyboard with me. And then I carry a Kindle because the reflection of the iPad hurts my eyes a little bit. And, of course, I have a BlackBerry with me because I haven’t gone over to the iPhone yet. I also have this zipper tube with a beautiful Baume & Mercier watch that basically stays in there, because what I wear is a $100 G-Shock watch that easily changes time zones. I always mean to wear the fancy-shmancy watch, but I never end up putting it on because this other one is just so efficient.

What are John T.A. Vanderslice’s favorite restaurants?

My favorite restaurant is 32 East in Delray Beach, Florida. I lived near the chef of the restaurant, James Beard Award-winning chef Nick Morfogen. He only cooks with the freshest ingredients and sources everything locally, so let’s just say he is a good person to know during hurricane season. I don’t want to emphasize only restaurants in our hotels, but La Pergola at the Waldorf’s Rome Cavalieri has this one fagottelli pasta dish that is almost like a little shell, and when you put it in your mouth, the sauce explodes from the pasta. Another favorite is Mama Maria in Boston. The veal saltimbocca is out of this world.

What are John T.A. Vanderslice's favorite cities to visit?

From the history to the restaurants, Rome is a spectacular city to visit. London is always a favorite. There’s nothing better than a great run in Hyde Park. My favorite thing is when I’m running one way, coming the other way is literally all the king’s horses. They exercise them in the morning, which is always a special occasion.
