What are Martin Miller’s favorite hotels?
In France, for example, a little place we go to a couple of times a year is a little monastery near Carcassonne. It’s called L’Abbaye – Château de Camon, and it’s the perfect retreat hotel. It’s run by a couple who just absolutely live and breathe the place. It’s just an old monastery that’s done perfectly in a great location, and it is their home. When you stay there, you don’t feel as if you’re staying in someone’s home — you don’t feel like you’re intruding on them. If you can get that balance where you can feel at home without feeling you impose on somebody’s home, that’s very difficult to achieve. That’s always the personality of the people running them.
