Bahia Honda Overview

You won't find any flashy, wild spring breakers here (and if you do, they'll most likely be the vegan, eco-friendly, granola types). Meaning 'deep bay' in Spanish, and located in the Lower Keys about 12 miles west of Marathon Key, Bahia Honda Key is virtually uninhabited and untouched by commercial commerce. Home to a 524-acre state park consisting of a spectacular beach, grassy park grounds and natural trails, it's the ultimate place to soak in a sunset, wade in the translucent ocean waters or simply read a book while listening to the lapping waves.

Snorkeling, swimming, fishing, and kayaking are just some of the many activities that you can dive into on Bahia Honda. With nurse sharks, spiny lobsters and colorful coral banks living silently below the surface, there's plenty to see offshore once you've strapped on a pair of flippers. Landlubbers can travel around the Key by bicycle. It won't take long to spy some wildlife, including exotic birds and the tiny Key Deer.

The best (and only) way to experience Bahia Honda Key is to rough it at Bahia Honda State Park—if you consider renting a campsite within steps of the beach roughing it. Otherwise, you can spruce up your stay with an air-conditioned cabin. Put those boy scout skills to work and start a campfire on the beach for a romantic dinner alfresco, or head to one of the neighboring lower keys for vegetarian fare or fine dining that offers the best top-of-the-catch seafood cuisine. Have a nightcap while you're out exploring the Lower Keys at tiki-hut inspired Boondocks or dock your boat at Parrotdise and sip a key lime margarita.
