Nightlife in Fort Myers gets an early start at the west-facing beaches on Estero Island, where sunsets are all the excuse anyone needs to start reveling. The bars and clubs around Times Square (the part of the island nearest to the bridge to the mainland) compete for sunset oglers with live music, free snacks and drink specials. A prime spot is The Beached Whale (1249 Estero Blvd., Fort Myers Beach, 239-463-5505; www.thebeachedwhale.com), whose rooftop balcony is the place to be until dusk; later in the evening, the action moves downstairs for daily live music and grooving to rock, funk and reggae bands. While you sip a cocktail, check out the supposedly haunted bar and see if you spot the apparitions of the former owners, a couple and their dog who died there in a 1955 fire.

Junkanoo on the Beach (3040 Estero Blvd., Fort Myers Beach, 239-463-6130; www.junkanoo- anthonys.com), which takes its name from the Bahamian street parade held every Boxing Day, attempts to re-create an island atmosphere with live reggae or a DJ nightly. Like the festival of Junkanoo itself, the party here can often go on into the wee hours.

Fort Myers' hippest dance party takes over the EnVie Lounge (2213 Main St., Fort Myers; www.myspace.com/ enviedowntown) Wednesdays through Sundays from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. Join the beautiful people of Fort Myers and get down to the latest DJ-spun club tunes and order bottles of Cristal for $425 a pop. On Sundays, don't miss the "World Famous Dock Party" at The Bridge Waterfront Restaurant (708 Fisherman's Wharf, Fort Myers Beach, 239-765-0050; www.thebridgerestaurant.com), located along the Gulf below the SkyBridge on San Carlos Island. Make like those in the know and arrive by boat and let the afternoon melt into the evening; two live bands keep the bash going from 2 to 11 p.m.

In the unlikely event that you came to Fort Myers for its cultural offerings, check out the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall at Edison State College (8099 College Parkway, Fort Myers, 239-481-4849, 800-440-7469; www.bbmannpah.com). It hosts traveling Broadway shows such as Wicked, comedians such as the yuksters on the Last Comic Standing tour, and musical acts like Lisa Loeb or Chris Isaak. Just make sure you head to a bar beforehand to soak in the sunset.

The Sanibel Stoop
As this Travel Channel clip reveals, Sanibel Island's beaches are so covered with shells that you'll regularly see people bending over in search of them—a sight the locals have dubbed the "Sanibel Stoop."
