Kauai Nightlife
KAUAI
Nightlife

Kauai, a haven for outdoorsy types and beach lovers, is quieter after dark than its sister islands of Oahu, Maui and Hawaii. But that doesn't mean there's nothing to do after the famous Kauai sunset—just embrace the more laid-back vibe.

Traditional luaus are a fun alternative to the usual dinner-and-drinks evening out. Luaus put a Hawaiian spin on dining, serving regional fare such as kalua pig and poi, a taro-root paste that's definitely an acquired taste. The entertainment portion features lovely ladies in costumes—not just grass skirts, but also elaborate headdresses—doing the hula to thumping live drummers along with mesmerizing fire dancers. There are several excellent luaus on the island. The Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa (1571 Poipu Road Koloa Kauai, 808-742-1234; http://kauai.hyatt.com) and the Sheraton Kauai (2440 Hoonani Road, Poipu Beach, Koloa, 808-742-1661; www.sheraton-kauai.com) host luaus several times each week; call for reservations and times. Or check out Kauai's newest rock-a-hula party, Luau Kalamaku (www.luaukalamaku.com) on Kilohana Plantation, which boasts a Polynesian show and a tour of the historic plantation grounds in addition to an authentic meal, crafts and dance performances.

Luaus tend to end early, but Kauai's night owls still have options. For a posh experience, sip a cognac at Stevenson's Library at the Grand Hyatt, a lounge that invites patrons to linger over after-dinner drinks. Or catch some local bands at Keoki's Paradise (2360 Kiahuna Plantation Drive, Koloa, 808-742-7534; www.keokisparadise.com) in Poipu, a favorite stop for live music. Sushi and Blues (5-5190 Kuhio Hwy Hanalei, 808-826-9701; www.sushiandblues.com) serves up a stunning view along with perfectly rolled sushi. Absorb the hip yet relaxed atmosphere with some sake and maki, and stay for live jazz.
The Point at the Sheraton Kauai is one of the liveliest spots on the island, offering a variety of entertainment, including live music, karaoke and DJs, all with an ocean view. Another great casual spot is Rob's Good Times Grill (4303 Rice St # B9 Lihue, 808-246-0311) in Lihue, where locals and tourists mingle over mai tais. If you're in the mood to bust a move, Rob's is your place—it's one of the few clubs that stays open late for dancing. It's far from formal, but there is a dress code, so remember to swap your sand-filled beachwear for a collared shirt. Kauai nightlife has a laid-back vibe, but that doesn't mean it's an unstylish one, too.
