Miami Beach Overview

MIAMI BEACH
Miami Beach is a smash-up of everything that is wonderful and over-the-top about South Florida. It's both a fabled paradise for celebrities and sun worshipers and a patchwork of family-friendly neighborhoods and residential beaches. It's a place where noisy club goers don't rev up for a night of revelry until after midnight, while elsewhere on the island sleepy seniors hit the hay by nine. It's food and fashion, surf and spring break, and beach bums and bikinis rolled into one. But what Miami Beach isn't, is a neighborhood of Miami proper. This seven-square-mile island is its own separate city with a population of nearly 90,000, and you can mingle with them when you stay at one of the luxe hotels on the beach, such as the soon-to-be-re-opened Fontainebleau (which will have iMacs at your disposal).

Today, the town offers a handful of laid-back year-round attractions
for visitors. Worth Avenue is the town's commercial hub and is somewhat
of a Rodeo Drive of Palm Beach County with its collection of designer shops
that attract the rich, famous and recently Botoxed. A visit to the historic
Breakers hotel should be on every visitor's checklist—even if it is just
for an overpriced cocktail served with an ocean view.
You can be forgiven for wanting to do no more than head straight for the water, where you can hop on a kayak, charter a yacht, or just stick close to the sand or curl up on a hammock. Whatever you want to do, Miami Beach delivers.
