Where to Stay and Dine
You know where you'll spend the bulk of your Daytona Beach vacation (the beach) and what's on your itinerary (lazing on the beach, swimming at the beach). But choosing where to stay and dine requires a bit more thought.

The Mobil two-star Plaza Resort and Spa (600 N. Atlantic Ave., Daytona Beach, 386-255-4471; www.plazaresortandspa.com) was damaged by three hurricanes in 2004, but after millions devoted to renovations you certainly can't tell. You'll be too busy to even think about it as you drink in the gorgeous view of the Atlantic Ocean from your private balcony, which comes with every room. Even the hotel's outdoor pool and spa overlook the water. The Plaza is minutes away from the Daytona Beach Ocean Center, six miles from Daytona Beach International Airport, and less than an hour from Orlando theme parks and Kennedy Space Center, making the location as good as the scenery.

For a more luxurious experience, book at room at the Mobil three-star Shores Resort and Spa (2637 S. Atlantic Ave., Daytona Beach Shores, 386-767-7350). This tranquil resort resembles a pretty beach house, right down to the sheer canopies over the beds. You'll also find flatscreen TVs, large windows facing the ocean and marble bathrooms. Spend your day sipping cocktails by the pool, or indulging in a massage at the spa (or both).

Once you choose where to stay, you'll have to figure out where to dine. Hungry motorheads should burn rubber over to the Cruisin' Café (3280-C S. Atlantic Ave., Daytona Beach, 386-767-0577; www.cruisincafe.com), a restaurant, bar and museum dedicated to all things NASCAR. Racing legends' photos on the walls stare at you while you eat cheeseburgers and fries in a retired stock car repurposed as a dining booth.

For a more refined dining experience, book a reservation at Chart House Restaurant (1100 Marina Point Drive, Daytona Beach, 386-255-9022; www.chart-house.com). This classy joint focuses on local flavors and fresh seafood (try the signature shrimp fresca or snapper), juicy steaks and delectable desserts. But you may want to forgo the hot chocolate lava cake if you want to look svelte in your swimsuit.
