Why choose a European cruise destination over, say, Alaska or the Caribbean? Your particular answer may vary, but most people do it because it’s an efficient way to see many European countries and cultures in one fell swoop. As a whole, it’s also a pretty easy continent to get around, thanks to the fact that so many Europeans speak English.
So which cruise destination is right for you? Most cruises have courses that visit the following regions: the Mediterranean (which can include Eastern countries like Greece, Croatia and even Egypt, and Western destinations like France, Italy and Spain); Northern Europe (Scandinavia, the United Kingdom, Russia); and transatlantic (where the focus is on the journey, not the destination, though ships still make fleeting stops at port of calls like the Dominican Republic and Portugal).
Pick the route with destinations that includes your style of travel or areas of interest. For example, if you dig museums and urban vibe, head for England or Copenhagen. If you’d rather be sunbathing or exploring archaeological sites, ship off to Greece or Spain. Or if you want a taste of Old World Europe, make your way to Russia.
Another thing to consider is the best season for your cruise. While Mediterranean destinations are temperate almost year-round, you’ll want to visit Northern European cities in the summer months (late May to early September) for the nicest weather. If you’re on a budget, however, note that the best times to visit these destinations coincide with nice weather and high season, and trips are therefore more expensive. No matter what destination you choose, bear in mind that the big issues to consider are destination attractions, travel expenses and weather.
