Planning a Transatlantic Cruise
There are a few things to consider before you depart on your transatlantic cruise.
Check in
Be sure to fly into your location a day ahead of time to allow for flight delays. Consider purchasing flight insurance to protect you in case a delay causes you to miss the ship. You’ll need to check in at least one hour before the ship departs; some cruise lines require you to check-in earlier. You can usually check in online at least a couple of days prior to departure to expedite the process.
Money
Check to see exactly what’s included as part of your cruise. You’ll need to bring cash for tips. Alcoholic drinks may not be included on some ships and extras like spa treatments and excursions may also incur a separate cost.
What to pack
On your first day bring a small bag with your travel documents so you don’t have to wait for your checked bags (which can sometimes take hours to arrive when thousands of people are boarding the ship). Spring and autumn are peak seasons because cruise lines use transatlantic voyages to reposition their ships so bring plenty of casual clothing that can be layered and check the ship’s dress code policy (depending on the type of cruise you’re taking, evening attire can get quite formal). To make your wardrobe stretch (especially if you’re cruising for more than 20 days) brings mix and match pieces.
Make reservations
With thousands of passengers on your cruise, you’ll need to make dinner reservations and book spa appointment and excursions as soon as possible. You can usually do this online a few days before departure.
And finally, don’t forget your passport.
