A private, deep-woods retreat in Lake Placid

16 Treatment Rooms

Lake Placid is known as the Olympic village and a high-altitude resort town in the middle of New York State’s 6-million-acre Adirondack Park. But it’s never been a spa destination — until now. The Spa at The Whiteface Lodge is “the only place in Lake Placid with a resort spa experience,” says Whiteface Lodge Resort & Spa’s general manager, Chris Pulito. (And Pulito knows spas: He’s the former general manager and spa director at Mirbeau Inn & Spa in Skaneateles; spa director at Four Seasons Hotel New York; and spa director at Stoweflake Mountain Resort & Spa and Topnotch Resort in Stowe, Vermont.)

At The Spa at The Whiteface Lodge, you get day-long access to a vast and sophisticated menu of treatments, an indoor/outdoor pool and hot tubs, a steam room, a fitness room, a spa café that offers healthy fare, a full-service salon, plus wellness and health classes that include yoga and aqua aerobics.

All of this happens within the luxury of the Whiteface Lodge’s Adirondack-style décor — antler chandeliers and sconces, Oriental rugs, richly textured upholstered custom-built hickory furniture and other well-appointed, woodsy details that carry throughout the entire property.

The Amenities

Greeted by the sounds of trickling water and soothing spa music, you are escorted to a shared common room, then to the lodge’s sanctuaries, one for men — with the look of a polished hunting club, complete with leather recliners and a flat-screen TV — and one for women, equally stylish, but even more spacious, with a full vanity and elegant table on which to eat a meal from the spa café. Both sanctuaries feature wooden lockers with luxurious robes, provide infused water and snacks, and have eucalyptus steam rooms and cedar wood saunas.

Beyond these areas and treatment rooms is the spa café, where you can order salads, sandwiches or a variety of smoothies, such as the Lodge Detox (avocado, banana, cucumber and kale) or the Raspberry Coconut Ripple (spinach, raspberry, flaxseed and coconut). Also within close proximity is a gym, with cutting-edge equipment and personal trainers, and the indoor/outdoor pool area, where in-floor heat means year-round access to the pools and three hot tubs. Though Whiteface Lodge isn’t on a body of water, the rustic-style resort and Adirondack mountain views — even the fishing pond stocked with local rainbow trout — lend the feel of a private, deep-woods Great Camp.

The Rooms

The lodge’s 16 treatment stations are large, slick, soundproof spaces that incorporate slate, marble, limestone and granite. Micro-fiber sheets, warm tile floors, towel heaters, rain showerheads and hydrotherapy tubs enhance the experience. The vibe is cabin cozy and, in the couples’ suite, romantic: side-by-side beds allow for tandem massages, and an adjoining soaking tub for two — with options for candles and rose petals — is available for complete relaxation.

The Treatments

The Lake Placid spa echoes the lodge’s identity as a lifestyle resort in the heart of the mountains, with natural products that come from local sources and signature treatments such as the Purifying Lodge Retreat (a mineral clay wrap followed by an application of infused oil and then a full-body hot stone massage) and the apple cider mask and massage. Treatments here are vast and varied, with enough options to fill a thick, glossy booklet.

There’s something for everyone, from massages — Swedish to deep tissue, river stone to four-handed — to facials, such as the Outdoorsman, catering to the specific skin care needs of men; the Great Outdoors, nourishing and rejuvenating the skin of those who have been exposed to extreme cold and overexposure to sun; or the Whiteface Peak, a customizable facial that involves deep cleaning, exfoliation and steam, followed by a relaxing massage. The Lodge Mud Wrap detoxifies and nourishes the body; Hiker’s Retreat focuses on sore, overworked feet, with a foot soak, exfoliation, mask and reflexology. Aromatherapy accompanies every treatment here: Choose from a line of Zents — also sold in the spa. Classic nail treatments, hair care, waxing and other salon services are also on offer.
