The Kennebunks are ideally situated on Maine’s coast near other charming New England towns, many of them just a short drive away. Here are the best side trips you should take from Kennebunk and Kennebunkport:
Portland. A quick 20-minute drive from Kennebunk, Portland offers a wider array of shops, restaurants and bars than you’ll find in Kennebunk. There’s good nightlife here, too. If you want a night off from lazy Kennebunk evenings, head into Portland for live music and dancing at many of the downtown-area bars.
Camden and Bar Harbor. Both cities are widely known as having some of the best hiking trails in the country. If you’re up for a good stretch, head north from Kennebunk toward Camden or Bar Harbor, and take in one of the scenic hikes from these coastal cities. The drive is a bit farther than other side trips (about two hours to Camden and three to Bar Harbor), but the scenery is worth it.
Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Located about 40 minutes from Kennebunk, Portsmouth is just over the bridge into New Hampshire. Portsmouth is another charming port town, a little larger than Kennebunk. Head into Portsmouth for the day for some additional shopping, classic restaurants and live music on the water.
Boston. Beantown is just 90 minutes from Kennebunk, and makes for a great day trip. We suggest you visit the three big F’s: Freedom Trail, Faneuil Hall Marketplace and Fenway Park.
