About Vandalia, Illinois:
The Illinois State Legislature chose the wilderness in the Kaskaskia River Valley as the site for the state's second capital, laid out the city, and sold lots. Vandalia housed the state legislature from 1819 to 1839, when Abraham Lincoln led a successful campaign to transfer the capital to Springfield.
