About Wheeling, Illinois:
The Wheeling area was first occupied by the Potawatomi. Settlers arrived in 1833 and began farming the fertile prairie soil. In 1836, a stagecoach route was established along Milwaukee Avenue, which was the main northbound route out of Chicago. The first commercial enterprise was a tavern-hotel (1837), followed by the establishment of a brewery (1850) on the Des Plaines River.
