If you’re a dim sum purist, know this: Yank Sing’s signature Shanghaiese xiao long bao
(soup-filled dumplings) may be untraditional, but they’re delicious—as is everything
that arrives on the cart at San Francisco’s most upscale dim sum palace. Dumplings
are a highlight, especially sweet and savory shrimp-based har gau and shiu mai.
Fried soft-shell crabs, flaky curry chicken puffs, and sticky rice packets are also
delicious. The second location, inside the historic Rincon Center, has its ups (great
murals in the building, outdoor atrium seating, allegedly better weekend selection
and a takeout counter) and its downs (a food court ambience indoors, compared to
the Stevenson location’s elegant maroon dining room). Both have immense dining
areas that manage to fill up with office crowds on weekdays and brunchers on
the weekend.
