Shangri-La Hotel, Doha

Sky-high luxury in the West Bay

One of the only hotels in the capital where you can meet a falcon in the lobby, Shangri-La Hotel, Doha is a fusion of Asian attention to detail and Arabian luxury.

Towering 50 stories above the city with 272 rooms and suites, the property’s size does not detract from the personalized service — expect to be greeted by name and your preferences recorded for future visits.

All rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows, allowing you take advantage of the building’s views of Doha Corniche and across the bay. And even though you are in the center of the city’s distinctive skyline, the tree-fringed seventh-floor pool deck — surrounded by high-rise towers and more than 90 palms — can feel like your own private oasis.

And when you start to feel peckish, don’t worry about straying too far. The hotel is home to Shanghai Club Cantonese restaurant, a favorite for dim sum, and Fuego steakhouse, a hot spot for Argentine beef.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • The hotel’s signature scent (a mixture of spices, including vanilla) permeates the building — it’s both familiar yet exotic, and memorable.
  • Book a Club Level room to enjoy access to the exclusive Horizon Club Lounge. The largest in Doha, the lounge boasts panoramic views of the city and a rotating menu of goodies throughout the day.
  • Shangri-La Hotel, Doha connects to City Centre Mall, one of the capital’s oldest and most-loved shopping centers. Here, you’ll find everything you need and more, including a cinema and ice-skating rink.
  • CHI, The Spa may be smaller than most with only eight treatment rooms, but it makes up for it with luxe facilities, including an exclusive outdoor hydrotonic pool with controllable jets to soothe and energize even the most jetlagged body.
  • The luxury hotel’s helipad offers breathtaking views of Doha and beyond. Rooftop yoga classes are regularly held here, and you can book the space (best at sunset) for special occasions.

Things to Know

  • The Doha hotel is in the heart of the central business district, which seems to be perpetually traffic clogged.
  • Keep in mind that the weekend starts on Fridays in Qatar. This is the best time to visit the pool, as the areas surrounding the hotel are quiet, though many stores at the nearby mall don’t open until after midday prayers.
  • While the pool area is luxurious, there is no beach access and no public stretches of sand within walking distance.
  • As with most city hotels in Doha, there are no balconies attached to the rooms.

The Rooms

  • Even with its city-center location, Shangri-La Hotel, Doha doesn’t skimp on room size. Even the smallest (Deluxe Room) accommodations have a comfortable 494 square feet, providing enough space for a sitting area.
  • All 272 rooms and suites come with deep soaking tubs and separate walk-in rain showers.
  • The 3,440-square-foot Shangri-La Suite is a palatial retreat complete with a separate living room, dining area and kitchenette, as well as a sumptuous bathroom equipped with a Jacuzzi, a 32-inch TV and Bulgari toiletries.
  • This is a business-oriented property, so the rooms are understated and outfitted with a full-sized work desk, plenty of power outlets, USB ports and complimentary Wi-Fi.

The Restaurants

  • For authentic Chinese cuisine, head to the top floor of the luxury hotel to dine at the stunning two-story Shanghai Club. The well-versed team will guide you through the menu choices, but we recommend the handcrafted dim sum and housemade noodles.
  • Be sure to indulge in Shanghai Club’s legendary Friday brunch, where you’ll enjoy a noodle-making demonstration by the chefs.
  • Be transported to Greece with dinner at Santorini. Order a table full of mezze (the moussaka is a like a big, warm hug) and catch the latest football game on the big screens.
  • In a city of great steakhouses, South American restaurant Fuego is a standout. Order the provoleta cheese empanadas for a starter, a filet of Argentine angus beef for your main event and end with the decadent caramelized dulce de leche crêpes for the full gaucho experience.
  • The Den is a discreet and charming lounge, famous for being the first non-smoking bar in Doha. A pianist performs nightly, and the bar team can whip up anything from a very British G&T to more exotic concoctions.
