Castle Hotel & Spa

A storybook stay just outside of Manhattan
VERIFIED LUXURY
Barely a half hour journey from Manhattan is Tarrytown, a historic and darling village that features quaint shops, antique stores, little cafés and a beautiful castle of all things. Reminiscent of the Norman castles in Wales, Scotland and Ireland, the Castle Hotel & Spa’s building has been there since the late 1800s. Aside from a stunning view and fairytale structure, the space comes with a lot of history, too.

Another luxe aspect that makes this property unique is its Thann Sanctuary Spa, a new spa and the first branch of this Thai company to open in the United States. The spa uses only high-end Thann products and offers an array of services from the traditional Thai massage and facials to foot reflexology. Guests can also enjoy the property’s Equus restaurant, an Auberge-style French eatery that focuses on local foods to create a seasonal menu.

Our Inspector's Highlights
  • Found in the darling village of Tarrytown on the banks of the Hudson River near Sleepy Hollow, Castle Hotel & Spa is high enough that you can just make out the Manhattan skyline on clear days from one of the property’s many windows.
  • The hotel is located just a hop, skip, and a jump away from the city. You can take the 30-minute Metro-North train ride from Grand Central Terminal, or drive about 30 miles from Midtown Manhattan.
  • The design style of Castle Hotel & Spa brings its guests back to another place in time. Inside the building you’ll find bold stonewalls, Gothic spires, vaults, and elongated windows, some with stained glass.
  • The hotel also has in a luxurious spa right next door. The spa looks like it has always been there yet, when you walk into it, the spa boasts a tranquil and totally separate feeling.
Things to Know
  • Many of the spaces sport the original owner’s hand-stamped wooden paneling, hand-carved chairs and benches that date back to Louis XIV, and Medieval-looking tapestries hanging on the walls.
  • Most of the common areas and rooms have a modern carpet, but instead of clashing with the ancient glam of the space, the carpeting works as a complementary feature, which allows the room to feel a bit more cozy.
  • Since there are so many outdoor events, festivals and activities such as hiking, kayaking and swimming in the warmer months, spring, summer and fall in Tarrytown are the best times to visit Castle Hotel & Spa.
  • Even if it’s cold out, there are plenty of things to do such as curling up next to the in-room fireplace, taking a drive to one of the nearby wineries, and watching the winter light play off the river.
The Rooms
  • Castle Hotel & Spa has a total of 31 rooms, seven are large suites situated in the original building, while the other 24 rooms prove smaller and are found in the hotel's newer Carollcliffe Wing.
  • There are two design themes: One an elegant air with a romantic palette of cranberry, rich chocolate brown with gold; the other offers deep green tones and gold accents, bold antique bronze trim and luxurious velvet upholstery.
  • Each room has high ceilings, goose down comforters, a Keurig coffee machine, and complimentary wireless Internet. Five out of six rooms even come with a working wood-burning fireplace.
  • Another perk many of the rooms sport is a stellar view of the Hudson River and from some vantages, you can just make out the silhouette of the Manhattan skyline.
The Restaurants
  • Castle Hotel & Spa has one main restaurant called Equus. Take a seat at one of the white-linen-covered tables and savor a delicious meal at this Auberge-style French restaurant located on the first floor of the hotel.
  • The restaurant serves a changing seasonal menu that offers traditional Provençal cuisine, but made with all locally sourced greens, fruits, meats and cheeses.
  • Try the restaurant’s prix fixe tasting menu, a five-course meal that may include dishes such as Montauk Point skate wing with gooseberries, Hudson Valley chicken with apricot and pistachio, and warm Valrhona chocolate cake.
  • One other restaurant option at the Tarrytown hotel is the seasonal Grotto or Poolside Bar. It offers a complete all-day menu from Equus, as well as cocktails and snacks.
