The Equinox, A Luxury Collection Golf Resort & Spa

Historic luxury in Vermont
VERIFIED LUXURY
One of Vermont’s oldest and most luxurious lodging properties, The Equinox, a Luxury Collection Golf Resort & Spa is arguably the Green Mountain State’s most storied hotel. With more than 200 years of history, The Equinox has hosted four American presidents — William Howard Taft, Ulysses Grant, Theodore Roosevelt and Benjamin Harrison — and served as a hub for American revolutionaries before becoming a fashionable summer destination for the well-to-do in the 19th century.

The Equinox was saved from destruction by the National Register of Historic Places. It reopened as a year-round getaway in the 1980s, and subsequent multi-million-dollar renovations further restored the resort to its former glory. These days, The Equinox is a highly desirable destination that continues to thrive and reinvent itself, all while staying true to its roots. Offering a spa, a splendid steakhouse and loads of local activities, this Vermont mainstay is still one of the best places to reside in the state.

Our Inspector's Highlights
  • Outside the luxury hotel, Main Street in Manchester Village, designated a historic district by the National Register of Historic Places, features a steepled church, small chapel, specialty shops, stately homes and a stunning backdrop made up of the Green Mountains to the east and the Taconic Mountain Range to the west.
  • While the resort is home to an 18-hole golf course and tennis courts, you are encouraged to explore beyond the resort and enjoy a slice of life in Vermont, too.
  • Staying at the Manchester Village hotel is indeed relaxing, but the spa gives you a chance to indulge in a little extra rejuvenation. Treatments include custom facials, aromatherapy, Swedish massages and sea salt, maple or citrus scrub body exfoliations.
  • Just beyond the spa’s 75-foot indoor pool — where you can swim laps or splash around with the kids — is an outdoor lounge area ideal for kicking back and soaking up some sun.
Things to Know
  • You haven’t truly visited Vermont until you have experienced the outdoors.
  • The sports lovers must try the ancient sport of falconry or try their hand at fly fishing on the Battenkill River.
  • For the trekkers among the The Equinox’s guests, you can hike trails at Equinox Pond, ski Bromley Mountain or take things off-road at a nearby Land Rover driving school.
The Rooms
  • For a hotel that dates back to 1769, The Equinox thoughtfully incorporates the past and present into its guest accommodations.
  • Deluxe rooms are spacious and bright with 15-foot-high ceilings, tall windows, antique charm and elegant décor with modern touches, such as marble bathrooms, pillow-top beds and flat-screen televisions.
  • Rooms face the 3,855-foot Equinox Mountain, historic Main Street in Manchester Village or the resort’s gardens.
  • On a family vacation? Go next door to the resort’s Charles Orvis Inn. Built in 1812, the cozy inn offers nine one- and two-bedroom suites with hardwood floors, comfortable living rooms with electric fireplaces, cherry paneled kitchens and oversized windows to let in plenty of natural light.
The Restaurants
  • The Marsh Tavern, which opened in 1769, served as a meeting place for the Green Mountain Boys during the Revolutionary War. The tavern includes a fireplace, antique black-and-white photos and ambient lighting, and it’s ideal for a lunchtime Reuben panino or braised lamb shank for dinner.
  • The adjacent Chop House restaurant is a smaller, more upscale option, serving filet mignon, ahi tuna and seared Scottish salmon. In the warmer months, dine outdoors on the historic hotel’s elegant front porch and enjoy a front-row seat to one of Vermont’s prettiest villages.
  • The Falcon Bar, which serves wine, spirits, beer, cheese and chocolate, is a favorite among guests. A spacious back deck with a fire pit and unparalleled views of Equinox Mountain make The Falcon Bar the best place to raise your glass and toast to a memorable Vermont getaway.
