Captain Lord Mansion

A warm, romantic Maine inn
Situated on a hill overlooking the Kennebunk River is the romantic Captain Lord Mansion, a 20-room bed and breakfast with all the luxury amenities of a full-service resort. Innkeepers Bev Davis and Rick Litchfield are what make this property feel like home. They meet each guest with a smile, handshake or hug, inviting them into their home and showing off all the little touches that make this bed and breakfast a Kennebunkport icon.

If you plan to visit Captain Lord Mansion during the summer months, you’ll find yourself exploring the nearby streets and seaside docks, filled with small boutiques, food shacks and antique stores. And in the winter months, cuddle up by the fireplace in your guest room and keep warm with a cup of hot coffee or savor a glass of wine during a romantic night in.
Our Inspector's Highlights
  • The Captain Lord Mansion is set at the head of a sloping street that overlooks the Kennebunk River, and just three short blocks from Dock Square, where you’ll find sailboats, fishing docks and a few local fisheries and clam shacks in the summertime.
  • The romantic bed and breakfast blends an intimate feel of a quaint New England inn with all the luxury amenities you’d find at a full-serve resort.
  • Each crevice of the house has been prepped specially by the innkeepers, Bev Davis and Rick Litchfield, who have been looking after the inn for more than 35 years.
  • Each floor features antique art, watercolors, paintings and trinkets that make the inn feel like home, while still giving the perception that you’ve stepped back in time.
  • Our favorite little alcove in Captain Lord Mansion is the wine nook — an old staircase next to the reception room where vinos are on display, allowing guests to pick and choose bottles they’re interested in or get a sneak peek at what the inn will open for a tasting later that night.
Things to Know
  • During the high-travel season, you’ll enjoy sailing, hiking to lighthouses, fishing and kayaking. You’ll fit right in with the locals, too, because enjoying the outdoors is a way of life for Maine residents.
  • In the winter months, cuddle up by the fireplace in your guest room or go antiquing at the local boutique shops in town.
  • Downtown Kennebunkport is a short walk from the inn, or you can drive the few minutes and park among the art galleries, boutiques and restaurants.
  • There’s a small spa in the basement of the inn and if you’re interested in a service, just ask the receptionist to help make an appointment for you.
  • Occasionally during the year, Captain Lord Mansion hosts wine tastings featuring special “wines of the month” that are served at the inn or can be purchased for picnics or casual drinking in your guest room.
The Rooms
  • Each room is named in honor of a boat or ship associated with the Lord family, complete with that vessel’s detailed history. The Mousam mini-suite, for example, is named for the Bark Mousam, William Lord Jr.’s, vessel, which dates back to the mid-1800s.
  • Inside each guest room at Captain Lord Mansion you’ll find a gas fireplace; double, queen or king-sized beds; luxury linens, and hand-sewn window drapes from innkeeper Bev Davis.
  • All guest rooms have private bathrooms (some with a separate soaking tub and shower, and all with heated floors), cable television and complimentary Internet.
  • No guest room is designed alike. Captain Lord Mansion was once a home and has retained its original composition, which means every room has a different layout and décor.
  • The rooms range from classic, premium and deluxe, and each is decorated uniquely with antiques, hand-sewn bed throws, a separate seating area, and an in-room mini fridge stocked with bottled water and sodas.
The Restaurants
  • Each morning, breakfast is served in the Gathering Room or at tables in the kitchen at 8:15 a.m. and 9:45 a.m. The three-course year-round breakfast service changes daily but typically includes farm-fresh eggs, fruit, organic yogurt, muffins, and a main course that varies but can include Belgian waffles, soufflés, Maine blueberry pancakes and French toast.
  • Throughout the day, however, you’ll find a variety of offerings to keep your appetite at bay. You’re invited to make yourself at home and help yourself to any of these complimentary offerings at any time of the day.
  • In the Country Kitchen, you will find a variety of cheeses, crackers, fresh fruits and sweets to choose from.
  • Just outside the kitchen is a beverage station where you’ll find Nespresso machines, and hot water for tea and hot chocolate.
  • In the summer months, there’s fresh iced tea, iced coffee and lemonade. And when it’s cooler outside, the kitchen serves a “Swedish Glogg,” which is a non-alcoholic mulled cider and cranberry juice, from a Crock-Pot in the kitchen.
