Chica Las Vegas

A culinary trip through Latin America
VERIFIED LUXURY

After studying law, chef Lorena Garcia gave it all up to pursue her passion for cooking. Garcia established herself in the Miami culinary scene and went on to appear in such TV shows as Top Chef Masters and America’s Next Great RestaurantMany years of hard work came to fruition with the 2017 opening of Chica Las Vegas — the first Latina-chef-run restaurant on the Strip.

A meal at the amplified space makes you feel as if you are dining in a grand South American villa. Wander through the bustling bar, the cozy lounge perfect for a cocktail after a long workday, the ceviche counter for those eating clean and the wall of fire that showcases the rotisserie and robust grilling program.

A menu of rum- and tequila-based tipples rounds out the experience, though you’d be remiss not to taste the restaurant’s fruity sangria.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Aside from Garcia’s work in the kitchen, she is also an accomplished author, television host and philanthropist. You might recognize her from season four of Top Chef Masters.
  • Arepas (a corn flatbread), tamales and tortillas are made in house and become an interactive experience for those in the dining room. Turning a classic into a new favorite, Garcia makes her arepas with anise and piloncillo (Mexican cane sugar) and tops them with braised short rib to create her savory asado negro dish.
  • The menu reads as a guided tour of Latin American cuisines, and is the first to specialize in this type of fare on the Las Vegas Strip — Garcia is not afraid to call it “fusion.”
  • A meal at Chica gives you the opportunity to sample flavors from countries such as Venezuela (where Garcia hails from), Peru, Brazil, Mexico and Argentina without ever leaving Las Vegas.
  • A mural of a beautiful, powerful woman adorns the dining room. Much of the décor, including vibrantly colored furniture and bold metallic lattice work, has a distinctly female feel.

Things to Know

  • Situated on Restaurant Row at The Venetian, Chica sits next to its sister restaurant Yardbird Southern Table & Bar, another concept from restaurateur John Kunkel and his group 50 Eggs, Inc. The business partners both call Miami home.
  • The Las Vegas restaurant has multiple cooking areas, including a built-in rotisserie wall, a custom churrasco grill and a cold bar for ceviches and salads.
  • Chica maintains a casual dress code.

The Food

  • For breakfast, try the sweet corn pancakes, which are an an ode to the Venezuelan cachapas that Garcia grew up eating. This iteration is served with fresh berries, whipped coconut cream and agave syrup.
  • A variety of tacos rule the lunch menu, including short rib dressed in Oaxacan mole, spicy chile-lime shrimp with habanero aioli, mojo-marinated pork and the vegetarian-friendly potato taquitos.
  • The star of the menu could be Garcia’s Meyer lemon rotisserie chicken, marinated in light and bright citruses and accompanied by a unique Peruvian purple potato salad and classic South American chimichurri.
  • On the weekends, brunch calls with decadent dishes like dulce de leche French toast with macerated berries, pancetta eggs Benedict (with arepas subbing for English muffins) and espresso-filled churros. Upgrade your meal with bottomless mimosas.

The Drinks

  • Tequila, mezcal and rum rule Chica’s drink menu, which features plenty of plays on classic South American sips. Try the F.W. Margarita, a version of the popular Mexican cocktail that is spicy and sweet with Fresno chili and fresh-pressed watermelon juice.
  • Taste local brew from Vesta Coffee in downtown Las Vegas, which specially blends seasonal Central and South American java for Chica. It is served in a French press, of course.
  • Sangrias and fruity Spanish gin and tonics appease non-tequila drinkers, as does a menu of classic cocktails, including the mojito, caipirinha, pisco sour and daiquiri.
