Our Inspector's Highlights
  • During the busy tourist season, the high-end The River Grill Restaurant is a popular spot filled with the sound of people having a good time in the evenings.
  • The interior dining areas of the main restaurant at Sorrel River Ranch Resort & Spa are spacious, softly lit and comfortable with wood treatments that add a rustic elegance.
  • The most sought-after dinner seating at the grill is found on the restaurant’s outdoor deck overlooking the Colorado River. When weather permits, the peaceful movement of the water against the shore makes an outstanding dining experience perfectly delightful.
  • The chef likes to use local ingredients. Utah-made cheese, Utah-brewed beer, Utah-caught fish — the menu is packed with state-sourced ingredients you probably can’t get at home.
  • This is a great place to get your vegetables. With an onsite garden, the restaurant sources many of its own veggies and uses them generously in a number of dishes.
Things to Know
  • Breakfast is served at the The River Grill from 7 to 10 a.m. Lunch service, which takes place on the River Deck, starts at 11 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m. And small plates, or tapas, are served on the River Deck from 5 to 8 p.m. during the summer months.
  • This Moab eatery serves dinner all year long from 6 to 9 p.m. each evening. Reservations are recommended in the evening, since the popular hotel restaurant is open to the public as well.
  • This may be fine dining, but it’s not fancy. Jeans and fleeces seemed to be the attire of choice when we were there, so don’t feel obligated to trot out your finery.
The Food
  • The River Grill Restaurant at Sorrel River Ranch Resort & Spa near Moab likes to describe itself as being a fresh spin on American classics, but we’d go so far as to say they focus on western-style cuisine with an emphasis on fresh, local and homemade.
  • With a garden on the grounds, the kitchen can source fresh produce year-round, and the benefits can be seen on your plate in the form of beet salads, housemade fruit compotes and piles of root vegetables.
  • The entrées are similarly sourced at the recommended restaurant, with a Utah ruby trout and free-range chicken being two guilt-free options for you to choose from.
  • Desserts are freshly baked and homemade, down to the chocolate chip cookies that the kitchen provides for turndown service.
The Drinks
  • Most of the specialty cocktails at The River Grill Restaurant at Sorrel River Ranch Resort & Spa skew toward fruity, refreshing options such as the blueberry mojito and straightforward strawberry-basil cocktail.
  • More traditional fruit-infused cocktails include the piña colada and the restaurant’s signature Rancho Margarita, which boasts housemade sweet-and-sour mix along with Don Julio Anejo tequila, Cointreau, lime and a nicely salted rim.
  • But no one will bat an eye if you prefer the consummate pre-dinner classics, such as the Manhattan or the Harvey Wallbanger, that dot the menu at the Moab restaurant.
