Manzanita

VERIFIED LUXURY
Located inside The Ritz Carlton, Lake Tahoe, Manzanita serves California cuisine with French influences, using local and sustainable ingredients. An open kitchen gives you an insider’s peek at the action behind-the-scenes, and views of the slopes outside get you up-close-and-personal with skiers and snowboarders. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, the restaurant is a popular afternoon spot for a hearty bite before heading back to the slopes. But dinner is a fancier affair, with sophisticated dishes like gnocchi with tomato concassé and smoked manchego, pan-seared Copper River salmon and Harper Ranch Colorado rack of lamb. The 94-seat restaurant has a seasonal outdoor terrace for the warmer months, making it a place to see and be seen any time of year. In case you want to bring the younger ones along for a meal, the restaurant offers a special children’s menu filled with plenty of dishes to satisfy the pickiest palates.

Our Inspector's Highlights
• While you could order off of the everyday dinner menu, for an unparalleled culinary experience, pull up a chair at the reservations-only chef’s tasting counter. You’ll have a front-row seat to the jam-packed kitchen that buzzes like a beehive with six to eight chefs dancing gracefully throughout the space.

• Another culinary option is the chef’s table. This journey is for up to eight people and involves personal interaction with the chef. Wondering if he caught that fish himself? Simply ask him.

• On Sundays, Manzanita offers a champagne brunch with unlimited bubbles, a bloody Mary bar, chilled seafood display, carving station, and a delicious spread of salads, cheese, charcuterie, and breakfast treats.
Things to Know
• The general dress code at Manzanita is resort attire, and skiers and snowboarders are welcome — which seems only fitting since the restaurant is located mid-mountain at the Northstar Resort.

• You may be fresh off the slopes during lunch, but dinner is a dressier affair, so you’ll probably want to avoid flip-flops and sports clothes; we suggest a collared shirt or sweater for men, and a casual dress or slacks for women.

• Breakfast is served Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., with options such as French toast, omelets, steel-cut oatmeal and pancakes. Lunch is available Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. with dishes like tuna niçoise, fish and chips, and Prince Edward Island mussels. Order dinner between 5:30 and 9:30 p.m., Sunday through Tuesday, or from 5:30 until 10 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday. The bar at the restaurant is open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and a special bar menu is available.
The Food
• Manzanita has an extensive menu with something for everyone. There are hearty starters like duck fat tatar tots with Dungeness crab and lemon beurre blanc, mountain-inspired mains such as the Niman Ranch pork tomahawk with cranberry bean cassoulet, and dishes from the hearth—think wood fired pizzas and maple-glazed Brussel sprouts.

• For the counter experience, chef Chris Watkins prepares a series of exquisite bites, amuse-bouches and larger plates. Watkins uses “classic techniques to whip up food with a modern thought.”

• A delicate crudo is turned into a beautiful wreath with melt-in-your-mouth foam and micro greens. A glass dome filled with smoke revels scrumptious pork belly and delicate ravioli.

• There’s an assortment of desserts: smooth vanilla bean ice cream, chocolate and caramel cake, and house-made chocolate truffles.
The Look
• Manzanita’s overall ambiance can described as earthy, with hardwood tables, a large central fireplace and exposed carved wood beams.

• With mirrored ceilings, glass accents and warm faux bois counters, the space is modern but somehow still invitingly retro — well, it is a ski lodge after all.

• It has a vibrant and inviting atmosphere.
