The Spa at Rancho Encantado

A Southwestern secluded sanctuary
With sweeping views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, The Spa at Rancho Encantado just north of Santa Fe blends into the landscape as it blends New Mexico traditions into its Native American-inspired treatments.

Meandering pathways lined with lavender, sage and rock gardens wend to the spa’s circular lobby, its design reminiscent of Native American ceremonial chambers called kivas. Exterior stone and water and fire features throughout the property give an overall feel of Southwestern Zen mindfulness.

Change into a plush, warmed robe in the locker room and then walk outside to the relaxation room with comfortable armchairs and a fireplace. From here, therapists will lead you to one of 15 rooms to receive any of a selection of classic Swedish to shamanic and Native American-inspired offerings.

Post-treatment, lounge by the heated pool and take in the mountain views from this secluded sanctuary.
Our Inspector's Highlights
  • The circular lobby of this 10,000-square-foot spa pays homage to Pueblo ceremonial structures. Be sure to check out the small gift shop selling locally made jewelry as well as Ortigia and HydroPeptide products.
  • Southwestern artwork and plastered walls give the 15 treatment rooms a sense of place and can be flooded with natural light, if desired. Each space offers a private outdoor shower to wash off body scrubs under the Santa Fe sun.
  • Sage, lavender and other plants that grow on the property are used in treatments such as the Mountain Spirit Purification, which includes an adobe clay mask and juniper-sage oil massage with hot stones.
  • The lobby, relaxation and treatment rooms occupy separate adobe-style buildings connected by short paths with landscaped gardens creating a tranquil, organic environment.
  • There are two options for unwinding before or after your treatment. The round, coed relaxation room has mission-style chairs, a fireplace, hot tea and dried fruit, while the outdoor lounge has a steam room and a year-round heated pool.
Things to Know
  • For an authentic experience, opt to enjoy your massage in an airy canvas teepee tucked into juniper and piñon trees near one of two supposed energy vortexes on the property.
  • The Spiritual Enhancement Menu offers extra services, such as a sage smudging ceremony in which herbal smoke is used to clear your energy before your treatment. Chakra balancing and mindful meditation can be performed during massages.
  • For those who seek a little extra Zen, yoga, Pilates and meditation classes are available at the fitness center.
The Treatments
  • The regionally inspired bodywork menu includes the Blue Corn and Honey Renewal, a luscious treatment using native blue corn and wildflower honey to exfoliate and hydrate with a body wrap followed by a full-body massage.
  • The Spiritual Journey employs shamanic and Native American-influenced techniques, including sage smudging and an adobe clay wrap followed by a purification ritual and chakra balancing massage.
  • The Enchanted Sunset begins with a massage and back scrub using the spa’s signature prickly pear and aloe oil blend.
  • The Enchanted Facial begins with a tourmaline gemstone massage using custom herbal enzymes (depending on your skin type) and finishes with a hand and foot massage. Other facials, waxing and mani-pedi services are offered as well.
The Facilities
  • Yoga and Pilates are held at the Movement Center, an 800-square-foot space with blond wood floors, sheer-curtain windows and mirrored walls with stretching bars.
  • Work up a sweat in the 1,200-square-foot fitness center, outfitted with a variety of cardio equipment and free weights. Large windows provide motivation in the form of sweeping desert vistas and plenty of natural light.
  • Couples should check out the luxury spa suites that include a private courtyard and heated soaking pool. A modern, roaring fireplace completes the romantic ambiance.
