Flare Spa

French-style pampering in Shanghai
Beauty product addicts will want to make a beeline for Four Seasons Hotel Pudong, Shanghai’s Flare Spa. Flare has the honor of being the only Guerlain-branded spa in China; all of the spa’s products come from the respected French perfume house.

Forgoing traditional Balinese décor, which calls for dark wood and low lighting, Flare goes fully contemporary, with futuristic all-white rooms whose windows let in a flood of sunlight but have shades that can be pulled down for coverage.

The hotel has a convenient poolside menu from which spa-goers and swimmers can order drinks and dishes like a Greek salad with feta, watermelon and olives and fried rice vermicelli with beef, as well as desserts.
Our Inspector's Highlights
• To enter the Shanghai retreat, you’ll walk between an art-deco-inspired screen and chinoiserie lamps up to the large dark wooden reception desk, behind which are full-height windows, filling the space with light.

• The boutique spa’s well-curated treatment list includes facials, massages and nail treatments using Guerlain polish.

• Plush treatment beds are immaculately made up with white sheets, adding to the overall light, airy ambiance.

• There’s a short list of services just for men, such as the manly License to Thrill package; a manicure and pedicure paired with a shaken — not stirred — martini.

• The six-room spa also employs a Guerlain makeup artist in the nail salon. The talented beauty expert uses the spa’s French products and can give you a makeover either in the spa or in the comfort and privacy of your room.
Things to Know
• Flare tends to fill up quickly, both with hotel guests and with locals seeking a blissful break. The best way to get an appointment at the popular spa is to book 24 hours in advance.

• For those who’d like to make an appointment with the Guerlain makeup artist, it’s best to do so at least 48 hours in advance.

• If you are planning a romantic getaway, we suggest the Ultimate treatment. This opulent three-hour package involves a Bentley pick-up, a couple’s 60-minute four-hands massage (two therapists per person), a 90-minute Guerlain Orchidée Impériale Signature Facial for two, a bath, and champagne and caviar.
The Treatments
• So as not to overwhelm, the massage list consists of only five massages. There are also three packages that include rubdowns.

• Body massages are available in 60- and 90-minute increments; the spa’s foot massage is available for 30 or 60 minutes.

• Among the options is the Four Hands at Four Seasons massage, in which two therapists work on your knots and kinks.

• The Are You Here Yet? massage is perfect for jetlagged travelers who want to rejuvenate before hitting the town.

• Sole to Soul, a traditional Chinese reflexology massage, utilizes bamboo sticks to improve circulation.
The Facilities
• Treatment rooms in the quaint spa eschew the dark Balinese-style décor found in many hotels for simple, minimalist spaces with windows that let in natural light.

• The two luxurious VIP spa suites include their own whirlpools and rainforest showers for couples.

• Everyone can use the saunas and ice fountains in the separate male and female spa zones.

• Spa visitors should be sure to take advantage of Four Seasons Hotel Pudong, Shanghai’s 24-hour state-of-the-art fitness center, hot tub and jade-tile infinity pool with sweeping views.
