Qin The Spa

Modern and tranquil Shanghai spa
Set inside Four Seasons Hotel Shanghai, the black-and-red-filled Qin The Spa offers a more modern spot to Zen out and enjoy a massage, scrub or body treatment. In the relaxation room, rest in a nap pod and watch the individual built-in TV.

If you prefer privacy, you’ll find plenty here; every treatment room comes with its own changing area and a rainforest shower stall that doubles as a mini steam room.

Qin also houses a branch of the expat-run traditional Chinese medicine clinic Body & Soul, so you can try out treatments like cupping and moxibustion (a healing technique that involves burning the herb mugwort).
Our Inspector's Highlights
  • Qin The Spa eschews the standard Balinese-style décor that most spas take on for something much more modern. Walk in and you’ll find a black tile floor, an off-white rug with black lines, red lacquer tables with leather tops and a variegated red marble reception desk.
  • White Chinese lanterns, glowing candles, a bowl of fruit and colorful glass sculptures complete the setup at the Four-Star spa.
  • At Qin The Spa you can enjoy an extensive selection of massages, body treatments, facials, traditional Chinese medicine treatments and hand and foot care.
  • Qin The Spa offers a handful of unique treatments. Among them is the TCM Stress Relief package, which involves a consultation with a licensed traditional Chinese medicine doctor, a targeted acupuncture session, a white ginseng and wine wrap, a scalp massage and an angelica and rhubarb hydrating gel.
  • The Shanghai spa offers gentleman’s pedicures and manicures for the discerning male. The focus of these treatments is to decrease roughness, so moisturizer and cuticle oil are used to soften everything.
Things to Know
  • If you wish to dip in the Jacuzzis and pool, bring a swimsuit — you can wring it out in the bathing suit dryers found in both the men’s and women’s locker rooms.
  • If you want something a little more substantial than the fruit and tea offered in the waiting area, the pool offers a menu of light food that can be delivered to the spa, as can anything off the Shanghai hotel’s extensive room service menu.
  • There are three specific couples treatments at Qin The Spa — though nearly every treatment can be performed side-by-side in a double treatment room.
The Treatments
  • During the Imperial Dragon Massage, the therapist will rub you with warm poultices, knead your muscles with long, deep strokes and sweep blue stones across your body.
  • The Red Phoenix body treatment kicks off with a white sandalwood and magnolia scrub before moving to a white sandalwood and magnolia body butter wrap. It all ends with a body mist infused with wild orchid and ruby.
  • Sweet Dreams is a traditional Chinese medicine package involving an acupuncture session, a peach blossom and dandelion spring bath and a hot stone massage.
  • The Black Tortoise Winter Rites ritual starts with either a plum blossom or artemisia body reviver or a winter mint body polish. Next up is a massage that uses plum wine and mandarin body balm to soothe your muscles.
The Facilities
  • If you’re coming from the pool or gym, you can get dressed in the accompanying locker rooms, which stock fluffy white towels in bamboo baskets and have black wood lockers and gray stone floors.
  • There are vanity stations with Four Seasons-brand grooming products, blow-dryers, cotton buds, showers, a steam room and sauna and a Jacuzzi also available in the locker rooms.
  • In the relaxation area of the spa you’ll find individual nap pods with super-soft blankets, built-in television screens, iPod docks and headphones.
  • Each treatment room at Qin The Spa has its own private shower — with rainforest shower head and steam functions.
