Pulitzer Amsterdam

Amsterdam's chic canal-side labyrinth
VERIFIED LUXURY

Consisting of 25 interlinking 17th- and 18th-century canal houses, Pulitzer Amsterdam offers a unique mix of Dutch history and modern craftsmanship.

In 1960, Peter Pulitzer (grandson of Joseph Pulitzer, founder of the Pulitzer Prize) bought 12 houses in the center of historic Amsterdam, along the Prinsengracht and Keizersgracht canals, and connected them to create this luxurious labyrinth.

Following a massive renovation in 2016, the Amsterdam hotel now has 225 plush accommodations divided among 25 canal houses as well as a two-story gym, serene inner gardens, a flower shop and a library showcasing what else but Pulitzer Prize-winning books.

Centrally located in the popular Nine Streets district and on the doorstep of the historic Jordaan neighborhood, the hotel is close to many trendy boutiques and local landmarks, such as the Royal Palace and the Anne Frank Museum.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • The Amsterdam hotel has managed to flawlessly combine traditional and historic features with contemporary design, giving the property an eclectic yet elegant feel. A perfect example of this signature style can be found in the quirky lobby, where you can admire vintage Persian rugs alongside modern art.
  • At the center of the Pulitzer, you will find the inner gardens — a green oasis in the middle of Amsterdam. This peaceful hideaway is where to go when you want to relax after a long day of sightseeing in the busy city.
  • Stay in one of the exceptional Collector’s Suites. Inspired by four distinct characters (an art devotee, an eccentric book lover, a composer and an antique collector), these unique accommodations have stunning design features, such as a floor-to-ceiling archway of books (Book Collector’s Suite) and a wall of trumpets (Music Collector’s Suite).
  • Take a tour on the Pulitzer’s own canal boat, The Tourist. This restored salon boat from 1909 departs every afternoon from the hotel’s private dock, or you can book a private cruise complete with a floating picnic.
  • The property’s exceptional concierge team can do more than just recommend a good restaurant. Book a tour with one of these knowledgeable guides to see Amsterdam through the eyes of a local.

Things to Know

  • All accommodations in this labyrinthine hotel are one of a kind, which means that not all rooms are the same size, nor do they have the same views. You might enjoy tranquil courtyard vistas or a picturesque vista of the bustling canal.
  • Since the historic hotel consists of 25 interlinking canal houses, navigating its hallways can be a bit challenging. It can sometimes feel like a maze, with different ceiling heights and small sets of stairs everywhere.
  • If you want to book a room mid-August, be quick. Around this time, the popular Prinsengrachtconcert is held, which means rooms tend to go fast.

The Rooms

  • All rooms come with free Wi-Fi, a vintage telephone, Le Labo amenities, a custom-made minibar with cocktail-mixing facilities and a bike repair set as an homage to Dutch culture.
  • For ultimate privacy and luxury, book one of the Collector’s Suites — each has its own private entrance and stunning views of the canals.
  • Romantics will want to stay in the Pulitzer Suite. This luxurious spot is a tribute to the best love stories and features a freestanding bathtub and a Super King bed.

The Restaurants

  • Enjoy drinks, breakfast and light dishes throughout the day at Pause. This café features lovely views of the calm gardens and a terrace.
  • Named for a 17th-century craftsman and former resident of one of the canal houses, Jansz is the luxury hotel’s elegant signature restaurant that serves modern classics with an international flair.
  • Step back in time with a visit to the art-deco-style Pulitzer’s Bar. The space exudes sophistication thanks to its sumptuous décor, suspender-clad bartenders and classic cocktails with a contemporary twist.
