Commodore Perry Estate, Auberge Resorts Collection

Austin's sprawling country getaway
VERIFIED LUXURY

Sprawled across 10 acres in Austin, Commodore Perry Estate, Auberge Resorts Collection offers a one-of-a-kind escape. The hotel, which debuted in June 2020, is a country getaway in the midst of the city.

It originally was built in 1928 as an Italianate home for businessman Edgar “Commodore” Perry and his wife, Lutie, where they enjoyed throwing lavish parties. The mansion was inspired by the couple’s European travels. The 10,800-square-foot architectural treasure is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Commodore Perry Estate is the first urban hotel for Auberge and marks the brand’s entrée into Texas. For the renovation, designer Ken Fulk retained the elegance and glamour of the property while giving it a modern update. The former home serves as the main hub and its five suites showcase 1920s-style furniture, while the newly added three-story inn has similar Italian and Spanish accents.

Explore the historic hotel’s formal gardens and you’ll find an oval pool and Lutie’s, a Southern restaurant with verdant views helmed by husband-and-wife duo executive chef Bradley Nicholson and executive pastry chef Susana Querejazu.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • The 50-foot pool looks like the backdrop for a Slim Aarons photo shoot in Palm Springs. The sleek oval pool is lined with lemon-and-white retro umbrellas and chaise lounges.
  • Expect unique offerings, like ice cream bikes scooping out cones, cocktail-making classes in the estate’s apothecary, plant propagation courses, punchbowl happy hours and more.
  • The hotel surprises with a palette of muted pinks, apricots, mustards and celadons along with hand-painted murals by artist Deborah Phillips. But it also has touches of Texas — Fulks scoured the state’s Round Top Antiques Fair for unique pieces, like a gramophone for the Listening Room.
  • The largest accommodation is the mansion’s Mr. and Mrs. Perry Suite, which comes with two master bedrooms, three bathrooms, a living room with a fireplace, a dining table that seats eight, a walk-in rain shower and deep-soaking tub.
  • Stroll the grounds to take in the mansion’s Italian Renaissance Revival architecture and the lovely gardens, including an area with antique roses.

Things to Know

  • A 1948 chapel with more than 1,600 square feet of indoor space and 3,000 square feet of outdoor space serves as a venue for weddings and events.
  • The boutique hotel provides charging for electric vehicles.
  • Pets up to 60 pounds are permitted to stay at Commodore Perry Estate, and they receive a bed, bowl and treats.
  • Borrow the hotel’s vintage bicycles or the house car to do some exploring.

The Rooms

  • The mansion houses five uniquely decorated suites. The LaVerne Suite is draped in pink and red florals, from the canopy bed to the vaulted ceiling, and the Hal Thompson Suite is covered in custom black-and-white print wallpaper and punched up with vibrant green and aqua.
  • Rooms at the inn have a fresh white palette, curved ceilings, a four-poster bed and a Juliette balcony or French doors that open to a garden or courtyard.
  • Instead of a traditional mini-bar, every room at the Austin hotel comes with a chic bar cart whose offerings will be tailored to your tastes.
  • Ranging from 625 to 1,060 square feet, inn suites have one bedroom, as well as their own garden or vast terrace.

The Activities

  • Wind down on weekdays with an old-fashioned punchbowl service in the mansion’s living room or the loggia. Each batch of cocktails is made tableside.
  • On Saturdays, head to the Listening Room to hear vintage records on the Victrola while sipping on special reserves of everything from mezcal to Texas whiskey.
  • Peruse the list of fitness classes, which include MoveStrong (mat-based exercises that use your body weight), Pilates, yoga and Candlelight Consciousness (guided meditations by candlelight).
  • Class is in session during Night School, the hotel’s outdoor dinner series that features community leaders and Austin creatives as speakers.
  • Immerse yourself in the garden with herb and plant propagation classes or take Infusions 101, which teaches how to infuse spirits with herbs and dried fruits.
