VERIFIED LUXURY

Modern luxury meets Old World elegance at the sophisticated Monument Hotel. Centrally located on Barcelona’s upscale shopping street, Passeig de Gràcia, the property sits near exclusive boutiques and renowned Gaudí masterpieces such as La Pedrera and Casa Batlló.

The stunning hotel has a rich heritage dating back to the 19th century, when it operated as part of Hotel Condes de Barcelona. In 2014, architect Oscar Tusquets worked alongside Carles Basso, Tote Moreno and interior designer Mercè Borrell to renovate the space, which debuted in 2016 as the luxe Monument Hotel.

Upon entering, you are welcomed by the intimate and artistic lounge. The beautifully restored stone spiral staircase in the lobby leads up the hotel’s five floors and displays original interior patio windows.

The exquisite mix of modern and traditional aesthetics makes this hotel a star player in bustling Barcelona. What really makes it stand out, however, is the amazing attention to detail that ensures a memorable stay.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • The incredibly renovated 1896 building maintains the impressive character and pre-modernist style of its original incarnation, Enric Batlló House. Beautiful brickwork, ceramic accents and wrought iron decorate the façade, catching the eyes of passersby.
  • Local Spanish and Catalan bands bring live music to Monument Hotel’s lounge every Thursday. In the warmer months, these jazz-filled nights move to the airy rooftop, where you can listen poolside.
  • Retreat to the lower level of the Barcelona property for a massage, steam bath or dry sauna at Valmont for Monument Hotel. Wellness and beauty treatments by this renowned Swiss brand are also available in your suite for optimal comfort and privacy.
  • During the summer, there is no better place to spend some leisure time than on the sixth-floor rooftop terrace. Comprising  restaurant and bar Verbena, a pool, a gym and a sunlit breakfast room, it makes the most of Barcelona’s balmy weather.
  • Choose your view. Suites overlooking Passeig de Gràcia have picturesque balconies, while suites facing Mallorca street looking onto the courtyard – a classic trait of homes in the Eixample neighborhood – ensure peace and quiet.

Things to Know

  • Apart from the extensive daily breakfast buffet, brunch is served every first and third Sunday of the month at bright and airy restaurant Glasss. Dubbed “Yummy Sundays,” this special event features an array of fresh salads, breakfast staples and a decadent dessert bar that complement the eatery’s gorgeous city vistas.
  • Fresh flower arrangements are put together weekly at the in-house Atelier florist, where you can order custom bouquets from Manuelsa Sosa of renowned botanical design company Gang & The Wool.
  • Elevate your visit with one of the high-end hotel’s packaged experiences based on the seven deadly sins. Indulgences range from Lust (a candlelit bubble bath, a bouquet of roses, strawberries and chocolates) to Envy (use of a Mini Cooper Cabrio and a reservation to Hallo cocktail bar for a champagne and oyster tasting).
  • Staying at the Monument is a sensory experience — the luxury hotel has a signature fragrance that welcomes you upon arrival. Every room is stocked with a bottle of the scent and a candle for purchase, meaning you can evoke vacation memories at home long after your bags are unpacked.

The Rooms

  • Rooms and suites have a warm feel thanks to the thoughtful combination of materials and textures used in their design. Interior brick walls, oak floors and heated bathroom floor tiles in the iconic hexagonal pattern of Passeig de Gràcia remind you that you are staying at a pre-modernist gem.
  • Browse the Coco-Mat pillow menu to select the perfect one for a restful sleep. Options include lavender-scented, natural latex and premium quality down or wool.
  • Opt for a suite to bask in a freestanding Victoria & Albert tub and a soothing rain shower stocked with Jo Malone products.
  • Pamper yourself with a selection from the bath menu, which offers a total spa-like experience without leaving your room.
  • Live like a VIP when you check into the Barcelona hotel’s nearly 1,400-square-foot Penthouse Suite. This modern retreat has five balconies, two bedrooms, two extra spacious bathrooms (both with freestanding tubs), an open kitchen with a table for six and gratis butler service.

The Restaurants

  • Helmed by renowned Basque chef Martín Berasategui, the contemporary Lasarte is the crown jewel of Monument Hotel’s culinary offerings. The toque’s imaginative menu and exemplary wine list make this restaurant a dream destination for foodies.
  • For a truly exclusive experience, the private dining room at Lasarte may be reserved for four to eight people. It overlooks the impeccable kitchen through floor-to-ceiling windows.
  • You can also savor Berasategui’s creations at the hotel’s more spacious Oria. The Mediterranean restaurant serves afternoon tea and late-night snacks in the lounge in addition to the customizable lunch and dinner menu.
  • Start your day on the rooftop terrace at Glasss, a bright and airy space with walls of windows bringing the outside in. If the extensive breakfast buffet doesn’t meet your needs, an à-la-minute menu should satisfy your cravings.
