The Reykjavik EDITION

Sophisticated design and understated luxury
VERIFIED LUXURY

With sophisticated design elements and a subtle sense of magnificence, The Reykjavik EDITION embodies the modern Icelandic concept of luxury in the heart of the Nordic capital. Drawing inspiration from Iceland’s sublime landscapes, the 2021-opened property carries a potent sense of place throughout thanks to unique design choices, but equally strong is a sense of the city’s energetic, creative and sometimes edgy vibe.

Next door to the impressive Harpa concert hall and conference center, this sleek hotel offers modern guest rooms and world-class restaurants and bars, as well as a nightclub and spa in a fantastic location on the city’s Old Harbor.

From here, it’s an easy five-minute walk to most of the capital’s interesting sights, including the Hallgrímskirkja church with its mesmerizing facade, the Reykjavik Art Museum and Tjörnin, a pretty pond next to the Reykjavik City Hall.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • When it comes to design, there is meticulous attention to detail in every nook and corner of the Reykjavik hotel. The choices are bold but never ostentatious, whether it’s the clean lines and charred timber in the ebony facade of the building (a nod to Iceland’s volcanic landscape), the Northern Lights-inspired digital artwork inside or the striking totem of stacked black lava rocks in the lobby (reminiscent of cairns found around the country) around which a basalt bench, made cozy with black sheepskins and cushions, invites you to sit and take it all in.
  • The modern accommodations have a calming palette of white, pale ashwood and gray oak, with faux fur rugs and colorful throws by local company Ístex for warmth. The walls feature photos of Iceland’s magical landscape by local photographers Pall Stefansson and Ragnar Axelsson. Plenty of natural light fills the rooms through floor-to-ceiling windows that offer views of the harbor, city, Harpa concert hall and Mount Esja. Some rooms overlook the hotel’s courtyard. Bathrooms come with rainfall showers and Le Labo toiletries featuring the EDITION’s exclusive scent.
  • The EDITION Spa features three treatment rooms, as well as a steam room, sauna, hammam and hydrotherapy plunge pool. Offering a social aspect to the experience, typical of geothermal spas in Iceland, there’s a lounge offering nourishing smoothies by day and expertly crafted cocktails by night that you’re welcome to enjoy in the plunge pool, or at any time during your visit to the spa. Try the 60-minute EDITION signature massage, a Swedish massage using oils featuring the Le Labo Black Tea scent. Or indulge in the restorative 120-minute Aegir treatment, which includes a facial, back massage and sea salt hammam scrub and time to sip on a spa cocktail.
  • Make time for a meal at the hotel’s signature restaurant Tides by acclaimed chef Gunnar Karl Gíslason (of hailed restaurant Dill). It’s an innovative, contemporary take on Icelandic cuisine with creative dishes like scallops with redcurrant, coffee and lovage, and grilled Dover sole with Hokkaido pumpkin, preserved lemon and amaranth. For dinner, the five-course chef’s menu is an excellent value.
  • Looking for a sundowner or nightcap? The elegant Lobby Bar with its inviting fireplace and comfortable couches serves Icelandic craft beers and cocktails with local flair. If you’d rather be outside while sipping on your drink, try the terrace at The Roof on the seventh floor, which offers remarkable panoramic views.

Things to Know

  • To take advantage of the rejuvenating spa facilities, arrive at least 30 minutes before your treatment or plan to stay after so you can enjoy a cocktail or two in the thermal pool or spa lounge bar.
  • Coffee lovers will appreciate that Nespresso machines are provided in the guest rooms, so you don’t need to step out on chilly mornings to enjoy your first cup of the day.
  • When you’re in a rush, choose from sourdough sandwiches, baked goods and coffee by local roastery Reykjavik Roasters at Tides Cafe.
  • On the weekends, head to the plush bar Tölt for a few drinks, then make your way to the hotel’s nightclub Sunset, one of the trendiest spots in town to let your hair down.
