The Fifth Avenue Hotel
The Fifth Avenue Hotel continues a gilded legacy. Composed of the mansion and a newly built 24-story tower, the property offers a visual feast of color, fabric and art, and whimsical touches abound.
Turn-of-the-century Manhattan socialite and former property owner Charlotte Goodridge, known for her flaneur-style flair, would have been pleased by the most recent renovation overseen by the legendary McKim, Mead & White architectural firm. At every turn, the hotel makes a grand design statement. Walls are adorned with peacock-shaped sconces, the lobby has a black lacquered cabinet of curiosities and Café Carmellini’s two large trees tantalize the eyes between bites.
The hotel's interior designer, Martin Brudnizki, the talent behind The Beekman and Hôtel Barrière Fouquet's New York, worked closely with Fifth Avenue owner Alex Ohebshalom, who personally curated the hotel's art collection, to create a wonderfully maximally styled space.
- After Mansion guests settle into their rooms, a velvet-suited Mansion Butler arrives with hot towels and a refreshing grapefruit juice and cinnamon concoction. The butler's services remain available for guests throughout their stay. Between 5 and 7 p.m., with the press of a button, butlers even deliver hand-shaken (or stirred) martinis to sip en suite.
- The aptly named Portrait Bar — where hand-painted portraits drape dark wood-paneled walls — offers a fire-lit atmosphere and exceptionally crafted, destination-inspired cocktails. Embark on a Roman holiday with a Campari-based drink or venture to Japan with a saffron-threaded whisky sour.
- The hotel's Rococo-style, maximalist interiors incorporate layers of colors, patterns and textures (everything from pastels and kaleidoscopic Murano chandeliers to mirrored ceilings, zebra hide rugs and pleated velvet headboards). They are a decadent delight.
- Even amid so many colorful interior design details, the hotel's collection of artwork grabs the eye. Ohebshalom’s pieces, which differ on every floor, include photographs by 20th-century American photographers William Klein, Gordon Parks and Melvin Sokolsky, glazed ceramic Venetian masks by Spanish artist Jaime Hayon and oil portraits at the eponymous Portrait Bar. Impeccable floral displays also add pops of life and color throughout the property. Guest rooms feature rotating flower arrangements such as a vivid pink ranunculus, in part credit to the neighboring floral district.
- Chef Andrew Carmellini, who opened popular NYC spots like Locanda Verde and Leuca, helms the hotel’s Café Carmellini. The fine-dining restaurant melds Italian and French cuisines in a modern, delicious manner.
- The Manhattan hotel's 153 rooms are divided between The Mansion and The Tower and provide plentiful room categories to fit anyone's style and situation.
- The Mansion exclusively offers suites. The interiors of these units share the hotel's over-the-top style with colorful painted crown moldings, sitting areas separated by a mint-julep-painted glass archway, plush velvet settees and a gleaming red lacquered maxi bar cabinet stocked with staff-selected snacks.
- Mansion Suite bathrooms boast a luxurious sunken bathtub, double vanity sinks and a walk-in shower. The scene is completed with the heated white marble floor, whimsical wallpaper and green glass water cups.
- The Tower houses most guest rooms. Here, the decor runs slightly more subdued and takes a tropical turn, with rattan dividers, paisley patterned drapery and sleeker lines.
- All guest rooms share an impressive list of amenities: Dyson hairdryers, signature scented toiletries, Duxiana beds, Marshall Bluetooth speakers, a centralized tablet to control the room's temperature and lighting, and a 55-inch smart TV.
