Be Tulum

The Riviera Maya’s hip getaway

Be Tulum, one of Argentine architect/owner Sebastian Sas’ stylish masterpieces, doesn’t go out of its way to be hip. It doesn’t need to. With the property’s magical location between a jungle and the Caribbean Sea and its structures made of 100 percent recycled wood jutting through the trees, the only thing cooler than the actual spaces are the breezes gently coming from the shore.

Take it all in from the comfortable confines of one of the 65 well-appointed suites that exemplify Tulum chic or meander along the resort’s sand-covered paths to discover three restaurants, a bar and the renowned Yäan Healing Sanctuary. Do as much (or as little) here as you’d like. Any judgment was left back at the Cancun International Airport. Just know that whatever you ultimately decide to do during your stay, you’ll look ultra-hip doing it.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Long before you’ve tried the outdoor shower in your Be Tulum suite, you’re bathed in natural elements — woods, stones, bamboo and neutral hues. Private units and public spaces give the resort’s chief designer, Mother Nature, ample room to shine, and she doesn’t disappoint.
  • First-floor suites have a private plunge pool that’s surrounded by thick vegetation. Second-floor units come with their own rooftops, providing a canvas of greens, blues and browns worthy of framing. Graciously, all accommodations deliver premium linens, bikes and 24-hour room service.
  • Yäan Healing Sanctuary, just across the main street from Be Tulum, is a wellness center focused on restoring the mind (clarity breathwork), body (massages, herbal bath rituals) and soul (sound healing). Try the locally inspired therapies.
  • A place as special as Be Tulum shouldn’t be kept all to yourself. Up to 10 guests can bask in its boho brilliance with a stay at the Casa Sastran residence. The stylish four-bedroom space includes a loft, stone tubs and access to a yacht, helicopter and personal chef at additional costs.
  • One of the big draws is the tranquil white-sand beach. When you aren’t swimming in the enticing blue waters, sink into one of the waterfront daybeds or hide under a palapa.

Things to Know

  • Epicures have three dining options: Maresias, an eatery that celebrates light dishes and the local fishermen; 4 Fuegos, where grilled meats and vegetables are the stars; and Ocumare, a restaurant where chef Elias Silva pays homage to traditional Mexican cuisine.
  • This is an adults-only hotel, which means it’s great for romantic getaways and trips with friends.
  • If you have the urge to explore the sights, Be Tulum is near most of the top area attractions — it borders the Sian Ka'an biosphere reserve, Tulum’s Mayan ruins are just a 30-minute ride while downtown is only 25 minutes away.
