J Hotel Shanghai Tower

Luxury reaches new heights in Shanghai
VERIFIED LUXURY

As the world’s highest hotel, J Hotel Shanghai Tower is a vision of lofty luxury with its stratospheric views and art-fueled interior design.

The luxury urban hotel stretches across the 84th to 105th floors and the 120th floor of the Shanghai Tower, China’s highest skyscraper at 2,000 feet tall. Thanks to the structure’s spiral design, each of the 131 rooms and 34 suites offers a distinct vantage point of the buzzing Puxi and Pudong districts, the Oriental Pearl Tower, the Huangpu River and the Bund.

In addition to vertiginous views, the spacious rooms also provide an elevated level of luxury with round-the-clock butler service, bespoke embossed wallpaper, handcrafted objets d’art and cultural touches like exquisite Chinese tea sets in every room.

Add a tranquil spa focusing on reiki, a striking swimming pool and seven restaurants (including the world’s highest), and J Hotel sets a new benchmark for luxury in Shanghai.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Claiming over 4,000 square feet of space, the 98th-floor Shanghai Suite feels like an opulent mansion in the clouds. The entrance sets the tone with exquisite artwork — picture a Chinese phoenix and peony embroidered on golden calfskin — before the decadent space opens to reveal a parlor, bedroom, dressing room, study, kitchen and physiotherapy area. In this expansive abode, you will discover sumptuous furniture, silk and leather accents, crystal chandeliers and Hermès and Diptyque toiletries.
  • Even the entry-level accommodations — the 645-square-foot Stateroom and 656-square-foot Skyline rooms — are more like suites, featuring separate living rooms and walk-in closets. Not to mention every guest at the hotel enjoys services such as on-demand in-room dining and a personal butler on call 24 hours a day.
  • Every corner of the property showcases avant-garde artistic sensibilities merged with respect for Chinese culture. From dancing wire sculptures pirouetting through the sky lobby to striking mosaics, glowing red corridors, gravity-defying crystal artwork, traditional Chinese landscape paintings and gleaming lacquerware, the Shanghai hotel puts its mesmerizing art collection front and center.
  • Alternative wellness treatments have gained traction in recent years, and J Hotel shows it has its finger on the pulse with its Reiki Spa. As its name suggests, the wellness center on level 85 focuses on reiki, the Japanese therapy in which practitioners aim to transfer “healing energy” through their palms to promote emotional and physical well-being.
  • Located on the 84th floor, the swimming pool makes an unforgettable first impression with its silvery hammered metal ceiling, glowing columns and 1,400-square-foot viewing deck showcasing stunning skyline views.

The Restaurants

  • Heavenly Jin on the 120th floor claims Guinness World Records' “highest restaurant in a building” title, but that’s just one reason to visit. In addition to sky-high views, there’s also an inviting open kitchen and a massive mosaic mural depicting the Silk Road, not to mention the delicious tasting menus featuring Huaiyang cuisine.
  • Centouno, on the slightly less dizzying 101st floor, focuses on southern Italian and Mediterranean fine dining. Opt for set menus or à la carte dishes featuring housemade pasta, freshly baked bread and a bounty of Italian delights while surrounded by the architectural wire-mesh artwork of famous Italian artist Edoardo Tresoldi.
  • For dinner with a show, there’s Kinnjyou Inaka, an elegant restaurant specializing in three types of Japanese cuisine: technique-driven kaiseki (akin to a haute cuisine seasonal tasting menu), teppanyaki served at a live cooking station and sushi prepared at a circular counter. Mirrored partitions in the main dining rooms, three 24k gold Japanese fan installations and 10 private rooms add to the sense of exclusivity.
  • At Cantonese fine-dining restaurant Jin Yan, you enter via an eye-catching hallway covered in crimson glaze, which leads to a crystal installation of a dragon with a pearl. The luxury continues inside, where the walls of the main dining room are adorned with jade, gold and glaze, while artist Zhou Xikang hand-painted landscapes for the moon doors to the eight private rooms.
  • The high-flying Yi Lounge is the place to be at sunset. Visit for afternoon tea, then linger for live jazz accompanied by handcrafted cocktails, premium champagnes and single-malt whiskies from the sizable selection.
