Wanda Reign on the Bund

An opulent reinvention of classic Shanghai
VERIFIED LUXURY

Wanda Reign on the Bund is a luxurious stay that emphasizes showcasing the best of Shanghainese design, food, art and culture.

Overlooking Shanghai’s famous riverside skyline, the hotel boasts stunning views at every turn and the convenience of the city on its doorstep. The Wanda Reign oozes decadence, from its towering 32-foot-high lobby (with jade-and-marble-inlaid tile) to the mesmerizing balcony vistas from the 21st floor.

The riverside location is the third to open in the exclusive Reign line from Wanda Hotels & Resorts group, part of the Dalian Wanda empire under one of China's richest men, Wang Jianlin. Designed by British architectural firm Foster and Partners, this sumptuous spot boasts a 180-degree view of the historic Bund with all the decadence needed for Shanghai’s young and fashionable set.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Wanda Reign on the Bund sits in a prime location, facing the futuristic Pudong skyline on one side and the shikumen-style buildings of the Old City on the other. It’s also just a stone’s throw from some of the city’s most exclusive bars, clubs and restaurants, and walking distance from Shanghai’s City of God temple and famous Yu Gardens.
  • One of the strengths of this luxe hotel is its sheer opulence. We particularly love the art deco features found throughout the property — accompanied by plenty of crystal, marble, velvet, silk and 10 different types of jade — as well as the stained-glass windows and traditional Suzhou embroidery.
  • The classic Shanghai afternoon tea is a must — the Wanda Reign edition is served in a vintage set reminiscent of the days when the city first became a fashionable trading port. Take your tea at the top-floor restaurant RuiKu for spectacular vistas.
  • All the artwork at Wanda Reign on the Bund was specially commissioned, featuring 33 pieces from contemporary Chinese artists. Most striking is the wall-sized abstract painting of Shanghai by renowned artist Shi Qi in the lobby.
  • Some rooms come with a massage chair. Indulge in several relaxing massages while taking in incredible views from the floor-to-ceiling windows.

Things to Know

  • When the temperature heats up in Shanghai during the summer, look out for fun pop-ups like ice cream and barbecues pitched up outside the ground-floor Café Reign restaurant.
  • He Japanese restaurant has gained a reputation as a proposal spot. One table in particular that faces the river has become a favorite for its view of the skyscrapers and the nightly light show.
  • The Shanghai hotel has a posh karaoke room. The enormous state-of-the art emporium comes equipped with massive speakers and television screens, luxury leather sofas and marble tables.
  • The lap of luxury can be found in the landmark Chairman’s Suite, a striking 947-square-foot accommodation with its own living room, dining area, bar, study, pantry, Jacuzzi, sauna and even a harp.

The Rooms

  • State-of-the-art iPads control all functions in the carefully designed rooms, including temperature, lighting, room service and any other requests, such as new pillows.
  • Instead of a spy hole in the door, you’ll find a digital mini screen peephole camera that is linked to your TV.
  • The luxury hotel has 193 guest rooms (including 14 suites) that are designed in two distinctive styles: Trendy, focused on art deco glamour, or Noble, featuring mahogany burl wood, magnolia embroideries and retro twists.
  • The marble bathrooms are a highlight. Each includes a standalone bathtub, an automatic toilet, adjustable frosting glass, heated towel rails, walk-in wardrobes with silk dressing gowns and ultra-luxe lighting options that include “spa” or “makeup” mode.

The Restaurants

  • Among Wanda Reign on the Bund’s five restaurants, you’ll definitely want to make a reservation at the elegant River Drunk Huaiyang. Six exquisitely designed private dining rooms feature unique tableware that accentuate the carefully presented Shanghai-inspired seafood dishes.
  • Boasting smart light displays and imported Japanese décor, He restaurant is led by Tokyo native chef Kikuchi Yoshiyuki, who masterfully creates custom-made sushi. For those who prefer their dinner a little more well done, there is also a private room for teppanyaki.
  • The RuiKu Restaurant and Champagne Lounge provides a spacious terrace and captivating panoramas. The popular eatery turns into a bar by night, complete with cocktails and a live DJ.
  • The hotel’s Shanghai breakfast is not to be missed. Full of local flavor, the buffet offers an impressive eight varieties of congee, eight types of local noodles and an array of street-food-inspired delicacies.
