Nicewonder Farm & Vineyards

A vineyard destination nestled in the Virginia Highlands
VERIFIED LUXURY

Escape to Nicewonder Farm & Vineyard’s 450 acres of rolling hills, lush green vineyards and luxurious dwellings, all in the stunning Virginia Highlands.

While the mountain retreat’s bucolic grounds prime it for activities like meditation walks, hikes and outdoor yoga, the winery should be at the top of your itinerary. First planted in 2013, the 13-acre vineyard has since produced an award-winning vintage, and the inn’s wine programming adds a unique element for you to experience.

With 28 rooms and a handful of yurts, the boutique inn exudes a cozy, intimate vibe felt throughout the property. A handful of communal areas allows you to tuck in by the fire pit with a book or board game, or for gentle conversation over a glass of wine. Just steps away, you will find an Appalachian fine-dining restaurant, a golf course and an infinity pool with a stunning vista of the vineyards and pond.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • For a different experience, book one of the individual yurts, each tucked under a blanket of trees with private views of the landscape. Breakfast gets delivered in the yurt each morning, and snacks, local beer and Nicewonder wine stock the pantry.
  • Each room exudes a rustic charm with the elegance of a country estate. Hues of gray and black accent the white walls and linens, and the floors of the suites are made with beautiful golden-ash wood, creating a unified color scape.
  • Reserve a private cabana and relax by the infinity pool. Each cabana comes with a stocked wine and beverage refrigerator, filled to your liking. The best part: the view from the pool encompasses the pond and the vines.
  • Make time to visit the onsite tasting room to try the wines made on the property, which include the viognier, chardonnay, merlot, petit verdot and cab franc varietals. Add on a charcuterie board to linger and take in the area’s natural beauty. And, if something strikes the taste buds, bring a case of wine home. The tasting room is open to the public and frequently hosts events and live music.
  • Guests have access to The Virginian, a golf club featuring a Tom Fazio-designed course and stunning green, which caters to pros, hobbyists and even kids.

The Restaurant

  • Chef Travis Milton brings his Appalachian heritage to Hickory, the main restaurant at the inn. Book a spot at the exclusive chef's table for unprecedented access into Milton’s process. No matter where your dinner takes place, expect well-executed seasonal dishes such as tartare with potato pavé and melted leek mayo; smoked duck with shallot soubise, stewed kale, fingerling potatoes and hickory syrup; or roasted trout with local bacon, sweet potato hash, trout roe beurre blanc and fresh herbs.
  • Hickory boasts a 1,700-bottle-capacity wine cellar, featuring some vintages of its very own. The drink menu also features house-crafted cocktails and beer.
  • Enjoy a hearty breakfast in Hickory, too. Order plates of biscuits and gravy, savory or sweet heirloom grain bowls, and johnnycakes with sorghum syrup.
